Woo-hoo for starting the new mexico board/thread.
My only addition would be Buffalo Exchange, in Albuquerque.
3005 Central Avenue NE
Albuquerque, NM 87106
(505) 262-0098
The university area around Buffalo Exchange (along Central) is a great place to browse and pick up neat gifts and fun things to look at as well.
Unfortunately, I've heard of no really crafty people or places around here....

Where is "around here"? I do shop at Buffalo, and I trade there - but I don't consider it a thrift store. It's not exactly a place you would go to find something to rip up and reconstruct.
It's all about Albuquerque, though. It's the most creative place I've ever lived, which isn't really saying a whole lot. :B

Wow, talk about forgetting to reply! Sorry!
"Around here" would be Albuquerque - I live in the NE Heights, and I guess I've pretty much scoured the University Area as well...
I guess I only consider Buffalo a thrift store because of its' second-hand nature, I would agree that it's definitely not the place to purchase things to rip-up or reconstruct.

No offense, but I would have to say Albuq. well, really NM as a whole is one of the most artsy, creative places. Especially since artists from all over the state come here (Alb.) to sell their wares. But anyhow, nothing a little more explring wont cure.
As far as thriftstores Is thrift town still around? It use to be right off of San Mateo until it moved awhile ago. I havent been there since it moved. If it is still there, it was the BEST place to find stuff from the 80's. I always found old toys, books, and albulms.

Thrift Town (I assume it's the same as the old one) is now on Menaul between Carlisle and Washington.
Abq is definitely creative!
For crafty people/places, try various shops, such as Papers! at Central/Carlisle for weekend paper and bookmaking classes. I've also seen similar things offered occasionally at local stained glass shops. UNM offers continuing ed classes with one-day workshops in crafty things, but the classes are usually way more expensive than the ones that shops offer. I think those would work great for meeting people. I've found that a lot of Abq people are a little bit quiet about their artsy inclinations - once you get to know them, it turns out that almost everyone has a hobby or two.

Albuquerque
:
D-Lites
, a great cheap (and inexpensive) resource for big jars of glitter, sulfite construction paper, really inexpensive laminating by the foot, and dare I say it, a really great die cut library you can use for free. An address would be worthless, but if you go to the APS (Alb Public Schools) grounds behind Milne Stadium, you'll find it. Although it is a teacher resource, it is open to the public. There are also endless cheap little things that teachers use for prizes and such like giant foam dice, plastic animals, whistles, glass snowflakes, whatever.

I went to Saver's yesterday...its been the first time i've been in awhile, and I was pretty much disgusted (with the prices, that is)... I found a totally awesome pair of jeans, but they were $12!! (maybe that's why they were still there, who wants to pay $12 for a pair of used jeans?!?!! you can get a good new pair for that much at like factory 2u or Ross)...plus there was this book I wanted, but they were gonna charge $15 for it!! Yah, it was a hardcover, it was in fair to good condition...but still!!! Whatever happened to thrift stores being the cheap place to go???

The salvation Army is no longer in Carlsbad. But there is a C.A.R.C. farm place that is great to buy cheap , used clothes. Also the Cat's Meow.

Why does everyone live in alb or sf???
in ruidoso i recommend the pink ladies aux thrift, and the humane society too. first baptist church in the downs is getting there, but one of the ladies brings her dog. i LOVE dogs, but I don't want someone else's dog germs on my stuff. I have enough dog germs of my own to deal with!!
anyway, I just wanted to get rui on the map!!
pm me if you are ever in the area!!!

Yay ABQ/NM representing! Um I nearly always go to Thrift Town, they are really clean and orginaized (by size than color) and I got a $50 pair of pants with tags still on them for $5.95 there once so i will always love them for that. I agree that Buffalo Exchange is not the place to buy stuff you are going to rip up, but you can find some snazzy deals there... sometimes. I never go to Goodwill because all of their stuff is a bit pricey... Saver's is too but I will go there in a pinch because it is a lot closer to my house than thrift town... There is also a Family Thrift on Juan Tabo (1201 Juan Tabo NE, 87111) you can find some deals there, although it is a bit unorganized. But yay for Thrift Stores and yay for ABQ/NM!

this is a great thread. I am hoping to visit NM this year, and will be on a limited budget for spending, but I love to find stuff I can recycle to use in my crazy quilting, quilting or atc's/mixed media

Animal humane in Albuquerque also has a thrift store. Theres also one on san mateo called safe house it's for battered women. Theres a ton of small thrift stores in abq if you just look around. The big ones like savers and goodwill mark their prices up alot but if you ask sometimes they'll lower the price. My girlfriend talked a savers manager into lowering the price of a dresser by $20 so it's do-able. It would be cool to start a local craft group though. I would be down to join.
