I say ignore husband!  I would do more rows of color before you do more rows of black (the black is a neat contrast!)
I agree... black always makes a good contrast when you're working with bright colors (or any colors for that matter...). It gives it a 'stained glass effect'.

As to softening it up, just wash it a few times and use a lot of fabric softener. I mostly use acrylic (some of it is really, really rough). I just throw it in the washer a few times in a row and use extra softener and it usually comes out nice and soft out of the dryer.

You use a lot of (liquid?) fabric softener?  or the clingy sheets?

I avoid acrylic because I cannot stand the way it feels, however, the cost would be great!!!

Acrylic usually softens when washed and dried just be careful not to dry it too hot.

woo, i just finished reading all 50 pages on this thread! from all i've seen, you all are going to tell me i'm crazy: i'm doing my star blanket with thread and a 2mm hook.
i have 11 rows now and the star is just a bit bigger than my hand. i started with the pattern on the first page but regardless of following the pattern right i was getting a pentagon instead of a star (yes, i was skipping the 2 dc on the center of each "side") so i modified the pattern a bit and i'm very pleased with the results now. i'm also very confused about why my star looks so pretty and isn't wonky at all, with no curly center or points, and it lays totally flat wherever i put it. please, believe me, i'm not bragging. i really can't believe i'm this lucky  Cheesy

There will always be people who say mean words  because you are different, and sometimes their minds cannot be changed. There are many more people who do not judge others based on how they look or where they are from. THOSE are the people whose WORDS truly matter.

Finished my blanket!  It curls a little because I mixed the different weights of yarn, I think if I was doing that again I would use two different hooks to try and even it out.  I think ideally i'd have done a final set of 9 rows of rainbow, but it would have been huge then, and to be honest I wanted to finish it, even though it was fun to do.  Hope you like it!

that's so psychadelic, like something from the electric circus (oops, dating myself  Cheesy)

it looks like the lines are moving, know what i mean? like the black is moving out from the center.

really, really cool.
