are you sure? i once sewed a motorcycle seat cover for my boyfriend's bike using a little singer. it's still on there and still nearly perfect after about 8 or 9 years. it was upholstery vinyl, not sparkly but thick. i did piping too.

I'm sure.

Your machine needs a clearance of 9/16"  under the foot to get this vinyl under it.  That spec doesn't happen on a home machine.  If you were able to sew 4 layers of vinyl on your Singer, the vinyl was a smaller gauge than Naugahyde.
