So I finally did it. My camera isn't working so no pics yet, but it actually came out the right size for a grown-up head. The only thing I'll alter if I make another adult-sized Raw Chicken Viking Hat is to make the drumsticks a bit bigger (they look kinda dinky on the bigger hat).
The pattern is mostly the same as the baby one with these few adjustments:

- with 3.75mm circular needles (US5), cast on 102 st.
- do 6 rounds seed stitch
- switch to 4mm circular (US6) needles and do 24 rounds in the 4-row gooseflesh pattern (as in the original pattern)
- *k2tog, k15, place marker* repeat all the way around so you have 6 sections
- continue in goosebumps pattern, reducing on odd-numbered rounds, until you have 54 stitches left (8 reducing rounds)
- change to reducing on every round until only 6 st left, break off yarn and pull through

- EARFLAPS - mark centre back, count 13 st forward along bottom edge, pick up 24 st
                 - do 3 rows seed stitch then begin reducing as per original pattern

- DRUMSTICKS - mine came out looking a tad small so next time I'll maybe increase by ~20% (making it pick up 30 st in back-slanting oval instead of just 25) and starting about 15 rows above edging

- the rest is the same (ties, feet, etc) and came out OK

I hope this helps anyone who has been looking to make a bigger version.

Congrats on figuring out the adult size version! Mine never progressed far enough for the drumsticks. Sad I'm sending "get fixed quick" vibes to your camera so we can see a picture!

I'm working on one of these for my sister's boyfriend to wear at Thanksgiving this year.  Possibly start a new family tradition, one person has to wear the "turkey hat"...it seems much more fun than wearing a Santa hat at Christmas.

I completed the hat and earflaps in a supersupersoft golden tan (it was the most appetizing color I could find at Jo-Ann's), and started working on the legs last night.  I am dreading this part the most, but I'll be sure to post some photos when it's completed!

How did I miss this before? This is brilliant! Nobody else has written out an adult-sized pattern (that I've found), and I get email all the time asking about sizing for grown-ups.

I'm linking this from the original pattern ASAP. Thanks!

My only question is: WHAT SIZE IS YOUR HEAD? Smiley

I hope to make one of these for my brother-in-law by Thanksgiving, and he has the largest head I've ever seen. Plus hair.

Thank you thank you thank you!

I finally finished mine, just in time for turkey day!  Excuse the quality of the photos, they're via camera-phone.

Obviously, I made mine in brown with little white feet so it's more turkey-esque...Very soft and cuddly, I love it dearly and hate to give it away.

Well I finally got to the end of the first drumstick of an adult sized hat, and the link to crochet instructions is dead. Does anyone know where one might find these instructions? (Not to crochet a whole hat, just the end of the drumstick.)

The original link is http://rawchickenhat.blogspot.com/2005/04/new-toe-style.html

Sarah doesn't refer to the contributor by name, unfortunately.

I'm doing the knitted hat in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino (the only raw-pink yarn I could find) and will post the revised counts, including the sized-up drumsticks, as soon as it's finished.

oh MAN!  that is sooo cute  Cool- my dad has a restaurant called GIZZARD CITY and I always am trying to find cool unique chicken themed gifts - they even have a weekend festival called GIZZARD FEST in the summer that has an arts and crafts fair... I found a cool keychain one year and brought it and it became the THING to buy for the next year!  I don't knit/crochet but I have to have one of these!!  I think it will be the next big thing!

LuvCrochet posted her crochet instructions for the whole drumsticks-- I bet you could use just the toe directions, korinthe.

http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=47371.msg613623#msg613623

Her basic guidelines for making the whole hat in crochet are here:

http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=47371.msg434565#msg434565

i'm off to update the links on my site! i've been hunting around forever trying to find those crochet toes. several people have been asking about them since the link went dead. i hadn't thought to search the craftster boards, since the original instructions were on blogger somewhere. i didn't save them because i don't crochet!

Much love to Luvcrochet for a crochet pattern. I've still got the training wheels on the crochet hook and having a pattern instead of trying to convert a knit pattern makes me sigh with relief.
