You can google illusion knitting and it will come up with a lot of sites and methods for charting.  It's pretty straightforward once you get started, though.  I think if you pick a pattern and give it a go once, you'll be able to design some illusion patterns on your own.  I would definately go with a pattern first, though, and decide if you like it before you spend a ton of time trying to plan it out and decide it's too tedious.  I hadn't realized how slow it was until last night I'd picked up a short row pattern for a scarf and was breezing through it!

thanks for the advice! (of course I should have thought about that myself)

this illusionknitting stuff is tricky. I'm a fairly experienced knitter, but this takes ages. wonder how long until my hands get the rythm...

hadn't heard of it before craftster came in to my life... wonder why...

I have an illusion knitting tutorial on my blog. It can be found here: http://geeyouknit.blogspirit.com/archive/2005/01/26/illusion_knitting_tutorial.html. For those of you experienced illusioners, let me know if they're anything I can add.

Your scarf is way cool! I like the grey on black a lot.

Basically all you need to know is:
Row 1--knit the row with color 1
Row 2--knit the light squares and purl the dark with color 1
row 3--knit the row with color 2
row 4--purl the light squares and knit the dark ones with color 2.

repeat ad nauseum.
