Hey everyone,

I just wanted to explain a bit more why Moderators remove posts that are essentially just advertising something for sale. The kinds of posts I'm referring to range from stuff Craftsters might really be interested in (like cool patterns or crafted goods) to stuff like iPods and other things totally unrelated to crafts.

If we were to just allow this, the forum would be totally overrun with advertising. The sad fact is that the internet is full of people trying to make a buck and I've got a thousand emails in my inbox for Rolex knock-offs and Viagra to prove it.

I realize that many people who post things like this here are doing it in good faith knowing that Craftsters would really be interested in what they are selling. But we need to have a clear cut policy on any kind of advertising like this because otherwise we get into gray areas where it's too hard to decide what to do.

Another couple things to consider are:

(a) Craftster is my job and it's a more-than-full-time job. I need to pay my bills in life just like anyone else. It's so much work that I really need to hire help and I'm far from being able to afford that. So when people decide to just use Craftster to advertise for free rather than buying a paid advertising campaign, it's unfair to me and the whole Craftster community in that sense. Craftster ad campaigns are purposely very inexpensive so that small businesses can afford them.

(b) And also very importantly-- if you post something that you sell, you are running the risk that some people in this community of DIY-ers will start to discuss how to make the item themselves. So to protect your work, you really shouldn't start a thread about it here.

I know that sometimes this policy seems unevenly carried out. This might because the Moderators can't possibly catch everything. Or it might be that we try and let it slide a bit here and there if an advertisement is mixed in with some other content that is acceptable like sharing how to make something. They are trying to carry this out as best they can.

And finally, I can't say this enough-- the Moderators here on Craftster volunteer their time to carry out the rules for the benefit of everyone. Please cut them some slack if they take action on something you post. It would be a total mess here without them. They work really hard and it's often not so fun to do what they have to do.

So what is acceptable in terms of free advertising on Craftster?

Feel free to put a link to your webshop in your signature and then when you participate in the forum like everyone else, people will see your link.

I'll also try to get the free Shop Crafty directory up again. It got all messed up a while back and I haven't had enough time to fix it but I promise that this is on my list of things to get to.

Thanks everyone.

Leah

Thanks Leah, I've seen quite a few advertisements and I think an importnt way to help is by reporting stuff like that.

The exception would be in boards like the Crafty Business Discussion board, where there are designated threads for promoting one's webshop?

Otherwise I am in big trouble.

No, that is fine.  Leah is mainly talking about people who strictly advertise. Talking about your business in the appropriate forum, to get advice, is fine.

OK, I sell nothing I make...but I see a lot of people post pictures of finished objects then in the text it will say now in my etsy shop....
While I like to see finished objects...these always strike me as advertisy.....and I see a lot of things I can make for myself..so I feel slighty..odd.. copying things I know people want to sell....just wondering where the line is drawn...businesses, individual sellers, once in a while etsyers?  I know I could copy from Etsy just as easily by searching it, but it seems like craftster would be a bad place to post  if you did not want others using your ideas and even selling similar items......

SO not trying to start controversy....just wondering....

Generally, we advise people that if they are keen on selling something they make, it probably isn't a great idea to post it here. It is sort of expected that the item will be replicated. If you have a top secret pattern, it is probably best not to post the item here.
