I've bumped this, cos I've just spotted a new R2 type droid on ebay, while searching for Star Wars Lego... its a black droid, with GOLD features!!! 

Anyone think its a bit too bling to make into a hat??? 

(And where am I gonna get gold colour yarn from- had a thought I could use some of the new glow in the dark stuff instead)

Ooh ooh!  I know this one!    You can use Glitterspun by Lion Brand.  It's gold and it's actually softer than it looks.  You can see the colors here: http://cache.lionbrand.com/yarns/glitterspun.htm 

Since you spell color with a 'u', you may have some trouble finding it.  I know it's all over the place in the US, and Lion Brand will ship to Canada (you can order it by clicking the tab at the top)...but if you're in England, then you may have to do some searching.

I had a second look at the droid- a bigger pic, and he's actually SILVER, which is much better for me, AND I have some silver yarn! (But its really scratchy, like a scouring cleaning cloth) 

Still tempted in making one with glow in the dark features though!

this hat ROCKS! My band director is in love with StarWars, and we compete in literally freezing weather during marching band season. The season's over now, but that means i've got about 8 months to start and finish this hat for him next year. Thank you SO much!

I knit up one of these cuties for my brother-in-law's Christmas gift. It worked up really quickly - under 2 days. I decided to knit it in the round instead of flat which worked pretty good, although there was a lot of time spent doing things to prevent tangling.

I must have missed the part where it told me to change colors for the blue stripe near the bottom and I added a few rounds on the all grey parts to make it longer, but the pattern was really easy to follow. Thanks!
