in the navy, you can sail the seven seas! nautical themed skirt

this is my first sewing project, done without patterns, instructions, help or a sewing machine. yup, that's right, it's allll handsewn. and not that badly, IMHO. it's made from blue and white fabric with thin stripes and dark red fabric, both of which came from the remnant bin and cost about $1.50 (canadian) put together. the anchor is an applique cut from the red fabric, and it was probably the suckiest part to sew, since it's the only part with visible stitching so I actually had to sew it neatly .
and I still have a lot of the red fabric, enough for another project.. yes I'm addicted already. technically, this isn't my first sewing project but my first completed project...there's a big difference. to be fair, I started this before half the posts here were sailor/pirate themed, so I didn't rip anyone off. it was originally supposed to be a pirate skirt but I thought that a skull applique would be too much if I added it, and it was 1:30 at night and I was tired. I came up with the idea and made the waistband over a month ago, then forgot about it, then picked it up a few days ago and actually started to work on it.

I apologise for the crappy pics, my camera hates life and is rebelling against me in funny ways, so the screen doesn't work and they turned out dark and ugly, making it necessary to fiddle with them in photoshop, hence the strange pinkness. /ramble

Wow that is sooo fantastic!! I love the skirt, you did a great job especially being hand sewn and all. It looks amazing on you too. ahhh I want it, too cute. Anyways, how exactly did you make the waistband? Did you just fold the fabric over and sew? ...great job

for the waistband, I just measured my hips where I wanted the skirt to sit, and cut 2 rectangles half that length and twice the width I wanted it to be out of my fabric. I made it with a seam on each side so it would look more professional, and I didn't make seam allowances cause my seams are tiny. then I just folded it over (hot dog, not hamburger), and sewed the sides together.
