What's the deal with the tumbleweeds?  I could never figure that out..

I sort of theorized that the tumbleweeds in the movie allude to fate moving The Dude throughout life...or at least the snippet of life we see in the movie.  The Dude is kind of a tumbleweed himself...just going with the flow...blowing in the wind.

That's what I thought too, as well as a visual metaphor for the transience of life in the 20th century, as the stranger kind of represents the past and is the observer/narrator. And the whole "time and place" thing...the west.
