The Mona Lisa...
Ahh, that woman with the enigmatic smile that inspired the world.  Well, she, along with this competition, inpsired me too!  My business is custom paintings for others, and I like to paint exactly what they want, so I thought I would see if I could follow along in the TEENSY shadow of the master.

Here we go:

Materials I used:
-4 wooden clothespins, cut apart with a tiny saw, mitered the corners, sanded it all and made my frame.
-Canvas.  Fabric or paper would have been easier, but I didn't want to cheat
-Staple gun.  Very hard to do...don't staple your fingers!
-Some teensy nails...again, authentic, but HARD to use..I split a few pieces of wood before I got them to hold the frame together.  (I used the thumbtack to 'drill'/pierce holes in the wood first!)
-And, paint, of course with some itty bitty brushes, and even a toothpick to paint with!
-The frame is made from polymer clay, baked and painted gold.

My basic materials:

Frame assembled:

First sketch of the lady:

My inspiration:

TA-DA!  Unfortunatley, my camera doesn't quite capture her...but you get the idea!  She is darker in color, and not 'pixelated' like the canvas looks.  Bad camera, BAD!  Tongue

AND, finished with her ruler for proof!  She is JUST under the 2" size!

BUT, she needed some bling (every girl does) so I researched what her frame looks like online...hard to do, cause she is behind glass.  I made the frame from baked and painted polymer clay (my 1st clay project!)

OH NO!!!!

Someone else is trying to take credit for her!!!!!
Back off Strawberry!
Original Youth painted this one!

Well ladies, that is our diva, the Mona Lisa!  I saw her in 1999 at the Louvre, and I hope she is as delightful to you in mini as she is in person!  OF course, my inspiration is from the original artist, Leonardo da Vinci.  I hope this is self-explanatory.

Hooray for my first Craftster competition!  It is also my first MINI painting!

P.S.  IF you look VERY closely, I am almost POSITIVE she is wearing Rostitchery's infinity dress!  Look at the sleeves and the way her sashes are tied...looks familiar, right?  Tongue

Very well done!  I love how you used the clothespins for stretcher bars...so ingenious!  And the painting came out great!

Why does Strawberry Shortcake try to take credit for everything? It's bad enough we all smell boring and she smell so berry sweet!

BTW amazing teeny mona lisa! I wish we could all put our teensy stuff together.

That is funny!  Yeah, she is a little TOO sweet and chipper and perfect all the time...it is a bit suspicious, isn't it?
I will have to keep my eye on her!

Thanks for the compliment!  It's funny that you posted that while I emailed you saying how funny it would be to put EVERYONE's minis in a little scene:
A doctor's office....little chairs all around (with gnomes and fairies in them, it seems), the little table with the maze on it in the kid's corner, the mona lisa on the wall... the table with a fish tank on it!!!  A book rack with the little abc book, journal, art book, garden book, etc...and a hatrack with the 2 tiny hats!
PRECIOUS!

I guess it would have to be a vet's office though, since we have kittens and caterpillars and beaded spiders running around too!

OH, I am sorry to steal your thunder!  That is the thing about the competition...post early, and everyone else can try to out craft you!  Post late: you risk being the 2nd version of something!

Hey, paint another fabulous masterpiece!  We can pretend it is for a mini museum!

Look, I started trying to make Michelangelo's "David", but had some "techincal difficulties"
He was less than 2" tall, but when I tried to carve/sculpt him...he 'lost something' and I gave up!

Let's just say, he and Lorena Bobbit's husband would have something in common now.

EEK!

I can't wait to see what you have made!  I agree, the more mini art the better!
(But I DO still get to say "I did it first!", right?  Tongue)

At least you didn't wait until the DAY OF the challenge to begin!  Gee whiz, it's like I am in college or something, procrastinating to write my paper until the weekend before!  Sillyness.  I knew I would think of something...the Mona Lisa was my 3rd attempt!

GEEZ, your'e not supposed to tell a serious artist that their stuff is 'cute' or adorable'...don't you know?
I guess it is hard not to say cute, when she is in the palm of my hand!

OKAY, she's adorable. You are right!

I will have to find a nice big shadowbox to put her in to alleviate her cutenessness.  Tongue

THANKS GUYS!

Honestly, I debated about cutting off a small chunk of the back of my hair to make a paintbrush out of a toothpick!

It was a struggle, cause I dont paint minis!  This is my first.  My last painting was a mural, 36 feet wide, by 8 feet tall!

I did NOT have the right brushes for this one...  I used a needle, a toothpick, and the pointy end of a safety pin for the finest lines.

BTW, I also had to get out my reading glasses, open all the curtains and blinds for the most light, AND change dead lightbulbs so I could see!

Thanks for the kudos!

AWwww, thanks ladies.

After painting her, I have decided that (after I get some tiny brushes) I want to make a big shadow box, and paint a popular or favorite painting from musuems I have visited around the world!

Next will be Starry Night (the MOMA in NYC), then a Picasso (paris), then a warhol (pittsburg), a miro (barcelona), a Salvador Dali....The persistance of memory, probably...you know, the melted clock one! (Paris), a Degas (something from the Orsay Museum), something from the Guggenheim in NYC ....
The possibilities are endless!

Of course, this is just a craftster's rambling dream.  My eyes would probably go blind trying!

I do love this mini comp SO.  We should do a mini craft-a-long for everything we have been inspired to make!  Don't let the spirit of the mini die!!!!!  Tongue

I will probably just get to paint a few mini's for others for personal swaps.  Anyone? anyone? bueller?

I am a loon, I know.

Well, I do have a bunch of upcoming projects and swaps...but I WOULD swap art for something of equal value/effort/talent from my wists... I have painted Starry Night before; see:

It's a watercolor piece (one of my only watercolor pieces, I am an acrylic painter mostly)  8 1/2" by 11" on watercolor paper. I usually use it to show clients that I can paint anything they want, but I would trade for it (or paint another one on canvas)...  The pics don't do it justice, of course...the details on this one are crisp and lovely.  It is ready to be framed!  Right now it just gets a place of 'honor' in my portfolio in a plastic sleeve!

I should've done this for the mini challenge, instead of the Mona Lisa; I am much better with abstracts and landscapes than portraits!  I didn't want to have ANOTHER Starry Night on here though; since the melted beads last month and all.  Oh well, tell me what you think!

That is gorgeous!! I looked at your wists and I can definitely make something off of their. If I can't, my sister can, since she sews and I don't, so it's all good! Smiley If you want to wait a while before swapping with me since you have so much going, I'm okay with waiting as well. Just let me know when you're ready. I dont' want you overwhelmed or anything. Maybe the beginning of September.  Thanks!  We could even request each other for the next Instant Swap!  OR both join the ongoing wists one.  I would prefer to do it formally since I am new to this swap thing.

That sounds good to me!! My sister said she's not capable of sewing wallets, she's never tried, so maybe I'll stick with the jewelry aspect if it's okay? I don't want your fabric to get ruined. (Don't get me wrong, my sister sews awesome, she's just never tried a wallet before, although she's made tons of purses. I should suck it up and try my hand at sewing some time!)

I'd prefer to do it formally as well--I'm doing a personal swap and that's the only experience I've had with swapping on her so far, though I did it many times on nervousness.org in it's heyday.
