Hey everyone,

Lately someone (or maybe multiple people) have been signing up for Craftster and then sending out Private Messages with hoaxes in them. These kinds of hoaxes are called "advance fee fraud." They are the ones that have been going around in emails for years and years. They involve someone who claims to have a lot of money that they can't retrieve for some reason and they need someone to send them their bank information or a small amount of money so they can wire them the money and then split the money with that person. Or some such crap... I never really look at them too closely...

So first of all -- we're all smart enough here to know that this is a total scam designed to get you to reveal your bank information or give up some money, right? I feel obligated to warn people who might not have otherwise heard of these hoaxes.

And second of all -- I'm so sorry that some of you have received these. I feel bad that you have been bothered by these annoying jerks. Sad

I'm going to try to come up with some safeguard that prevents people form being able to do this. It's tricky to come up with just the right safeguard though because I want to try not to punish people who legitimately sign up to send someone a legitimate Private Message.

So that's all for now! Please know that I'm thinking about ways to prevent this!

Leah

P.S.

Here's some info on these kinds of scams:

And here's a funny website which documents people who manage to "scam the scammers" right back:

Aha!  I got one of these a couple months back on Craftster.  It was from someone saying they were in Africa and wanted help traveling to the US to get out of their war-torn village, etc.  My first thought was, "Your war torn village has Internet access?"

Aw man, I hope this isn't mean, but as soon as I read the last sentance, I laughed. I never would of thought of that.

I hope it didn't sound horrible when I wrote it~ I just couldn't grasp why someone would use something so horrible to try to get money from someone!

Nah, it doesn't sound horrible...I laughed when I read it, too.  And it's a logical question.

Thanks for all your work, Leah.  And that scambaiting site is really...something special.

Oh, I get them all the time in my e-mails. I just report them.  The lastest ones I've been getting are some soldiers in Iraq found a large amount of money US currancy and want to hide it for safe keeping and promising to split, LOL!!! Yeah right.  Now that is screaming spam/scam.
