temporary tattoos from construction paper!!
«
on:
July 30, 2006 04:41:24 PM »
my gnome named larry, of course!
the brand paper i used
being stupid and all, i accedentally found that some black construction paper can act as henna but its a little darker in color than actual henna...all you do is cut it out in the shape you want, put it on your skin where you want it, and place a wet (not to dry to the point that theres no water left, but not dripping) paper towel and place it on the construction paper. leave it there for about 2-3 mins and peel it off...so far mine has lasted about a week, though it has faded slightly due to washing.
HELPFUL THINGS TO KNOW
-comes off with nail polish remover/rubbing alcohol
-dont move it while its sitting! will caouse shadow effect
WARNING: will stain reg towels/clothes so be careful, use papertowels/napkins
please post pics if you tried this!

Be CAREFUL! This makes me very uneasy. Remember that they used chemicals to dye this paper, and these are chemicals that are NOT good for your body. Theyre not body safe, which means very bad things could happen to your skin. I dont know which particular dye is used in this black construction paper, but there is a dye in black hair dye (also passed off as black henna, fyi.) and multiple other things called paraphenylenediamin
e that can cause VERY nasty skin sensitization that leads to infection and permenant scarring. See this page for more information:

Gah. I agree with vanilla. You need to be really careful with these dyes. What this is basically doing is creating a chemical reaction on your skin. It may be kosher for you, but it could be bad news bears for me.

It's not a chemical reaction, it's a dye transfer. The companies that make construction paper aren't really in it for quality; adding water to the paper simply loosens the dye's weak hold on the paper and it stains your skin.
Just remember - little children everywhere are doing fun things like putting this paper in their mouths, some are even swallowing it (I'm sure I'm not the only person who had a little brother who had contests in kindergarten on who could eat their art project the fastest). Unless you have some ancient paper around from the days when they used freaky chemicals to make stuff (the fun days of crayons that killed you if you ingested them and formaldehyde shampoo), the packages nowadays tend to have 'Non-Toxic' printed right on them.

The debate roused my interest, So I hit the Almighty Google, and found a conversation on the printech archive.
Pro:
"Any art product that will be used by children under the age of 18 must be
tested for toxicity and labeled according to the Consumer Product Safety
Commission. It is a stringent test, and I would make the assumption that
construction paper, being an arts material, must meet the same requirements.
It should be safe for children and animals, but to be on the safe side, you may
wish to ask the manufacutere if he/she is required to test and label according
to the Arts labeling standard.
Marci Kinter
SGIA "
Con:
"Having spent six years working at a paper mill, I would discourage using
colored paper for animal bedding. Colored paper is manufactured using
either anionic direct dies in liquid or dry form. These dies are just a
part of the chemicals used in the manufacture of paper. If the paper is
neutral based, calcium carbonate, clay, titanium dioxide, as well as
retention aids and biocides are used. While paper may seen like a
simple product, it is very tough to manufacture and requires getting a
lot of chemistry correct to manufacture it properly. Just my
observations from working in the industry.
Tom Reed
Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Sciences "
My two cents? go get some henna. But the constuction paper thing shouldn't kill you., particularly if the paper is labeled "non-toxic."

Ooh, that's neat-o!
I love temporary tattoos and used to have some henna powder, too. But this is so much cheaper--and personalized!
I'm gonna try it tomorrow! What a rebel!

Most construction paper for kids uses vegetable dyes, so it is non-toxic. However I wouldn't try this with "artist paper" meant for adults-- it doesn't have to conform to the same toxicity standards.
Basically, check the package to make sure it is non-toxic before trying this.
