Civil War Corset, anyone? pic heavy
«
on:
July 30, 2006 10:06:40 AM »
I made this corset for me and it ended up being too large. I finished this in May just before memorial day and wore it to one reenactment, and it was surprisingly comfortable. I'm in the middle of making a second corset, and I'm trying to sell this one. If anyone knows anybody with a 34-36 inch waist that needs a good corset, lol.
Corset in Detail
- Click any photo to see a larger version.
This corset is made of 100% cotton coutil, lined with 100% cotton, edges bound with 100% cotton twill tape and boned with Farthingale's "Plastic Whalebone". Busk eye and knobs are set through the coutil and all grommets for lacing are covered. Lacing in back is reinforced with boning on both sides. Size: Modern size 14, B cup, fits waist 34-36 inches. Designed for the fleshier woman while achieving amazing comfort. Pattern: Homespun Patterns W-008 (Front Fastening Corset).

Overall appearance of the corset. The hip panels appear wavy because the dress form does not have the twice-blessed/thrice-cursed hips and backside many women have. This corset on a person looks much more sleek:
http://seamshistoric.com/project/coutil/finished.jpg
The busk is inserted between the coutil and the lining, so that only the eyes and knobs are exposed. The busk is 11.5 inches long and has five fastenings.

The lacing is arranged so that you never have to untie it in the back. The lacing is threaded properly and the excess lacing is drawn from the waist, to achieve the best results. This means this corset need never be unlaced in any way -- merely untied. Grommet holes are covered with thread to prevent the catching of the lacing, fashion fabric, or undergarments on the metal.

The edges of the corset are covered in 100% cotton twill tape. This material also covers the inside seam on the hip gusset. This technique creates decorative stitching on the exterior.

Absolutely everything about this corset can be seen at my website (see link in sig) in the past projects and sell page. This post is actually a large portion of the sell page, but not all of it..

Very well done! I've been meaning to make a proper corset myself one of these days.

I'd be really proud if I'd made that, I started making myself a proper corset (I'm obsessive about them but being a student I can't really afford to buy them anymore when they are over £100 a go) but the sewing machine broke, I was really enjoying making it too

This was my first project with my new sewing machine. I had a $70 cheapie from wallie world than I knew would never withstand this project, so I bought a Babylock Crafter's Choice and set immediately to working on this! It was fun to make, and I'm just begging for the time to make the new one.
