I thought it could be when I first saw the pattern -  shouldn't be too hard. You could even do a Turkish caston and wouldn't have to sew up the bottom. If it starts at the bottom, like I think I remember it does...

You could knit it in the round, but I wonder if you don't really want to. Seams to give the bag some structure seem like a really good idea to me. Just a thought.

There is a nice Hobo bag pattern on the lion brand site www.lionbrand.com which calls for Lion Cotton Chunky (I used two strands of Sugar N Cream held together)...here is what my FO looks like (ignore the crazy color change in the middle, I was just testing the pattern and didn't have enough of the colors I was using!):

It isn't EXACTLY the same, but it is similar.
