Well, apparently cheese "smells bad", so it's not so popular.

Thrift stores in Japan are called Recycle Shops.  Many temples have monthly flea markets and / or antique fairs.  I know of markets and recycle shops and fabric stores in Nagoya (where I live), but am clueless about what's what and what's where in Tokyo.  Just google it??  Or ask your hosts.  Locals are the best resource you have.  There's lots of great stuff to discover in Japan, that hasn't been translated... yet!

There is a very famous flea market / antique fair in Kyoto on the 21st of each month at Toji Temple.

Hi Moonoverbrooklyn,What are Marimo products?  I can't promise, but I can try to pick some up while I'm there.

Are you going to school in Brooklyn (my step-daughter is)?

Is Marimo the Japanese version of sea monkeys?  The site is very cute but confusing (there's some translating they forgot to do(-: ).

I'm confused about whether you want the real algae or the cute cartoon products that look like algae??
