I used a 4x4 rib, and just seemed them up the sides. i wanted them to gradually get looser near the bottom so they'd flare out, so i started with #6's and then after a while, i switched to #7's  and then #9's and then finally #10's near the bottom.
i then wove in blue yarn to use as a drawstring at the top.

my mom was making fun of me knitting them during the summer time (we were driving 13 hours to the beach)
but THEN she said the vent under her leg was making her leg cold while she drove. so she actually used them.

Ahh i love them!  Smiley i've decided to make legwarmers as my next project, and i really like the ribbing idea... i never thought of that.

how many stiches did you originally cast on?

i'm pretty sure i used 40. it has to be a multiple of 8, so if you made them bigger you'd need 48.
