So, I used a piece of string to estimate the strap length on a bag I want to make.  Does 44" seem like an insane measurement for a messanger bag that I want to wear like across my body? Undecided

I don't really know how much 44" is. I always forget how to convert it into cm.
But I made a bag and the strap is 125cm. Hope that helps.

Inches to centimeters and vice versa is a very simple one. 2.5 centimeters per inch. So 44" * 2.5 = 110cm.

So nervosa, your measurement is not only appropriate, it's actually a little but shorter than Javede's.

Thanks, good to know.  I wouldn't have wanted to finish the strap only to put it on and it be too short.  It would be very me not to check beforehand!

Well I'm not sure how tall you are, but I have a little bag with a handle measuring 44" long, and it looks just fine. Not too low, but fits the description of a messenger bag.
