I was considering buying this yarn in bulk ( http://www.discountyarnsale.com/Pixie.htm ) and just dying the yarn whatever colors I wanted.

It's 100% nylon, so I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of dye I could use and how to do so.

I really love the texture of this yarn, so I wouldn't want the dye to ruin it one bit.

Thanks for your help!

i don't like nylon for starters, but basically you can't dye it. or not at home anyway. I have afeeling dylon multipurpose can be used on synthetics, but I don't think it works that well. There are too many nasty chemicals involved, basically you need to get the molecules in the dye to bond to the plastic molecules. i would just buy it in the colours you want.

Are you sure?

I would buy it in the colors I want if it weren't for a few reasons:

1. None of the stores around me carry it.
2. I want more colors than are available.
3. I don't have a credit card, so buying everything at once/in bulk online would be ideal.
4. You can't get more than one color in bulk.

Second opinion, anyone?

theres actually a thread in the clothes section app. ppl ave had success dyeng nylon - the dylon multipurpose dye sounds like the best bet - but it would be cheaper just to buy it in the colours you like

Actually, Dylon isn't the best kind. I found a better type and it's pretty inexpensive.
Especially since you dilute it a lot.
It seems cheaper, but I get the freedom of using any color combos I want in any quantity.

Plus, the closest place to buy it is 15-20 minutes away.
So I save gas money in the process. Smiley

Would the same product be appropriate to dye rayon chenille?

.... very old post, I know.

But I've had success dyeing nylon with food dyes (like Kool Aid). I just treated it the same as you do wool, except from memory it took a bit longer. This ONLY works with nylon tho, no other synthetics. Don't ask me why, my chemist dad did tell me... but sadly the chem-whiz genes passed me by.
