edit: Whoops. If you don't know the Jayne hat, check it out: (It really is supposed to look this silly.)

I'm a huge Firefly fan as well as the b/f, and he asked for one for his birthday, but I don't knit. So I crocheted one.

Was a FF marathon on SciFi today...but rather than watch all the commercials, I popped my DVDs in and watched those instead while I cleaned and did paperwork :p

Awesome! I love it ! I've been meaning to do that for awhile - I've seen all these pictures and tutorials for the knit one, but this is the first time I've seen a crochet one - you've inspired me to get on this (I've been contemplating making one for the friend who introduced me to firefly for over 6 months!) - any tips? And what yarn did you use?

I went to Wal-Mart (yay, Wal-Mart!) and picked up Red Heart's worsted weight yarn in Ranch Red, Carrot, and Gold, for $2.77 a skein. I used a K hook, (hat was done in one Firefly episode XD) I started with a chain 60, since it seemed to fit comfortably around, and made 7 hdc rows in Carrot. The 8th is a sc row, and then I switched to Gold. After 6 hdc rows, I started decreasing and ended with another row of sc, and threaded yarn through each sc stitch and pulled tiiiight. I left enough of hole at the top so it would gather and be all Jayne-ish. Earflaps are 15 hdc across, in a rectangle. I tacked each corner at the end to the middle of the second row so it came out earflap-shaped. And there's a very sad looking pom-pom at the top.

Thanks so much! Now to get me some Red Heart
