Hey, fellow craftsters! So, I work for this agency in Topeka that helps individuals with severe and persistent mental illness live a more independent work, social, and living lifestyle. We help them follow through to the end of a recovery program!
So, you know how TARC has their Winter Wonderland, and Our Lady of Guadalupe has their Fiesta Mexicana... this agency needs something of their own, too, to help raise money. The money would be used to buy more housing for these individuals (b/c we're so full right now we have a waiting list to get into our program), and also update the homes that we have now -new appliances, new computers, new furniture, bedding, etc.
I wanted to do the 'flying Buffalo' like how Cincinnati has the Big Pig Gig (google it! It's awesome!), but it costs too much money to start. So, this year we thought we'd start with locally crafted/painted/decorated bird houses with themes. They could be everything from provacative (but not too risque) to whimisical to just weird and artsy. My hope is to supply local artists with the bird houses and let them do their thing with it. Then I want the bird houses back and I want to sell them for profit for our mentally ill individuals. I want this to become a well-known community event where people can buy all these local artists' bird houses and also get our agency's name out there. What do you all think? I would be more than willing, of course, to allow you to place your business card or contact info on the bird house that is decorated. I wanted to get Twigs and Feathers and Freda and Maude and any other local art business involved, too. I'm just not sure where to start. I know many of my clients can probably build the bird houses, and I want them in several shapes and sizes. I want artists that can paint beautiful scenic things on it to mosaic tilers and knitters (a bird cozy! ha). Just...everyone and everything! I want it all!!!
SO, any ideas on how to start this, where to start? Who would like to participate? How much the houses could be sold for (say if they were being made for approximately $5-10 each) and where to sell them??
