Adhesive for putting fabric on paper greeting cards???
«
on:
July 09, 2006 11:36:55 AM »
Could someone clue me in on how to adhere fabric on card stock greeting cards? I want to make some sets up with some cool fabric scraps, but I'm afraid of making the paper going wavy on me.
I'm guessing this is a pretty basic skill....I'm such a beginner. I was thinking modge podge sort of glue would work, but is it too messy? Would you paste in on the back of the fabric so that it's not super shiny?

Mod-podge will work, but probably go wavy on the paper. I would use either Rubber Cement, which may saturate the fabric or discolor it, but won't go wavy, or spray adhesive, which is my choice when I need something to stick over a larger area. The problem with spray glue is it's really really strong, so set up a nice big area for overspray, otherwise you will be sticking to everything in your house.

I like to use Aslan. At least that's what it is called over here. It is a sheet of glue between to peel off sheets of plastic. First you pull of one side and stick it to the fabric. Then you cut it out en peel of the other side, so you can stick it to the paper. (I hope this made sense to you.)

What about sewing them on by machine or hand? I have a bunch of little fabric scraps and some handmade paper and I want to use the sewing machine to stitch them on and stitch all over the card to add interesting or random patterns. Maybe buttons or small pics.

I love sewn cards too, but two things of which you should be aware:
1) Fraying. Don't use slippery fabrics or fabrics that fray easily. Sturdy cottons or thicker fabrics work best, in my experience.
2) Paper dulls sewing machine needles, so I would recommend using different needles for your regular sewing and paper/card sewing.

Thanks for the great tips for sewing on paper. "Littlest Ninja"
I tried it out last night and cut out some scraps in the shape of little shirts and mini skirts and sewed them on. I saw this great idea to add little clothes hangers made out of wire in a book and I want to try that.
The only problem I had was getting the tension correct for sewing on paper and I had to make a few attempts after some of the stitching came lose leaving a little trail of dots on the paper. I was thinking that maybe just making little dot designs, without using any thread at all, might be interesting?

1) Fraying. Don't use slippery fabrics or fabrics that fray easily.
That can be solved with some iron on interfacing.
