Birthday Cake Hat or Centrepiece


In Single Crochet
   
Materials: Worsted weight yarn in Brown, (or cake colour) White (for doily/brim), and frosting colour, hook size 4.5 mm. Assorted buttons (from Michaels craft store) for decorations, Happy Birthday ribbon etc.
Note: To use as a centrepiece, stuff with fibrefill, or cover an ice cream or margarine tub.

Starting at top of hat, use frosting colour:
Row 1: chain 6 and then join with slipstitch to form a ring.
Row 2: sc around ring, ch 1
Row 3: 2 single crochet in each stitch, slip stitch, ch1
Row 4: *1 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 5: *2 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 6: *3 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 7: *4 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 8: *5 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 9: *6 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 10: *7 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 11: *8 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 12: *9 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 13: *10 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch, ch 1
Row 14: sc around, slip stitch, ch 1.
Row 15: sc in back loops only, all round. Slip stitch. Fasten off frosting colour.

With Cake colour: (Start of the side of hat)
Row 1-? : sc around, slip stitch, ch 1, building sides as high as you want. Cover your ears. Then do
doily / brim. (See below)
<OR> For a two-layer cake:
Row 1-10: sc around, slipstitch, ch 1. Fasten off cake colour, attach frosting colour.
Row 11: sc around, slip stitch, ch 1.
Row 12: sc in back loops only, slip stitch.
Row 13: *ch2, slipstitch in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch. Fasten off frosting colour and attach cake colour.
Row 14 -24: sc around, slipstitch, ch 1. Fasten off cake colour, attach doily / brim colour.

Make doily/brim with white:
Row 1: sc all round, slipstitch, ch 1.
Row 2: sc in front loops only, slip stitch, ch 1.
Row 3: sc all round, slipstitch.
Row 4: *ch 2,2 dc in next sc, slip stitch in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch. Fasten off.

Finishing:
Starting back at top of hat, join frosting colour. Working in front loops, *ch2, slipstitch in next stitch* repeat, slip stitch. Fasten off frosting colour. 
Decorate: Sew on buttons, ribbons etc.

How cute....At my son's preschool they have a birthday hat the kids get to wear on thier birthdays I may have to make a couple of these and donate them to the class...the one they have looks pretty worn.

Thanks for the compliments!  I was at a friends 50th birthday party last summer. She had a fabric birthday cake hat.  I've never seen one before, and thought I could re-creat it myself in crochet. I'm glad you like it! Grin
