I made this altered book Home of my Soul for my best friend.  I wanted to give it a home too, so I constructed a cardboard niched frame for it; then covered it with heavy watercolour paper and painted it with acrylics.  The book is held in by a chain with a bar clasp and is easily removed.  Its like 2 gifts in one-a piece of art for her wall and a personal altered book just for her (luv you dondi!!)

I only have a couple of very lousy pics of the inside of the book-its a reflection on the past few years which have been a trial for us (my mom died of breast cancer shortly after I was diagnosed with leukemia, Dondi left her job and stayed with my kids so I could go away for a stem cell transplant, then a year later her husband died in a car accident. . . man oh man)

jump into the mystery (of life) page- collage, stamped, glazed painted page, with sequins

this page is hard to see, the left is layered with lots of thin papers, stamped and aged with the creation of man picture in the middle ; the right has a little niche with a mirror, glazed and stamped page with gel medium transfers of an Arabic newspaper, sequins and a poem I wrote for Dondi
long the journey
grief has seared my heart
joy lifts me
time passes through me
in my own temple
the home of my soul

Beautiful book.  I also think everyone should look at your niche.  It appears to be cut perfectly and the sides are even and smooth.

thanx so much, actually its just a big cardboard box with a foamcore top and a small cardboard box duct-taped in for the niche; the watercolour paper kind of smoothes it all out and I was very lucky in finding a frame that fit the whole deal.  I like this idea cause I've made a few altered books but what to do with them?  Theres only so many I can have lying around getting lost in my giant stax of magazines - even though I love the whole art you can touch thing.

thanks, I am doing pretty well now after having the stem cell transplant-its 3 years in November and I finally feel sort of normal again.  I owe my best friend so much for all she's done for my family.

Very moving.
I love that you placed it in the frame...such a mystical niche.

You are special friends to each other, I know. I don't know who said it, but don't you think "A friend learns the song of your heart, and sings it back to you when you have forgotten it."
