My sister lent me a book called  (I think) The Art Doll Project.  It was a swap with a group of artists that didn't know each other, like us.  Anywho...each one made a very basic doll out of whatever they wanted and a journal to go with it and the dolls were passed from artist to artist and each would add their own touches and write in the journal about what they did and why.  When they were done they would pass it on to the next artist and they would do the same. After everyone had a chance to add their own touch you would get your own doll back and be able to read about everything people did.  It was very cool, some would write from the doll's perspective , one person's journal was actually individual tiny boxes that had handmade paper in them and each artist knew what box was theirs to write in because it was wrapped in a map of their home town.  Not all dolls were sewn, one was a wooden box with a torso and arms inside and that was it.  One was a store bought Madeleine doll that they ended up doing really funky things to.  I would think it would be a great way to stretch our abilities as artists and to end up with a really cool doll at the end.

Wink G'DAY EVERYONE! REALLY HAPPY TO SEE THAT THERE IS INTEREST IN A DOLL SWAP.  JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW I AM A BEGINNER IN MAKING DOLLS,   AND THAT I AM FROM AUSTRALIA. DOES THIS WORRY ANYONE WITH POSTAGE COSTS.
IF YOUR INTERESTED WE'LL MAKE IT SO WE HAVE TWO MONTHS BEFORE WE NEED TO START SENDING.  WE'LL CLOSE SIGN UPS ON THE 15TH OF AUGUST 2004.  IF INTERESTED LEAVE SOME IDEAS OF WHAT TYPE OF DOLL WE CAN SWAP. Grin

with Tam living in australia, we may want to consider just a straight swap as opposed to a circulating swap because postage might get a little out of control... just a thought.

Maybe we could organize two separate swaps?  One straight doll swap, and another longer rotating swap?

i would prefer a strait swap rather than a cahin type swap. only thing is i cant make a doll to save my life. i take that back i can make a yarn doll. would a yarn doll  count as good for a swap like this?

Bk-  When I get off work I will dig out the book (The Art Doll Chronicles) and see if it offers any advice for setting up this kind of swap.  I would imagine it would have to be pretty regimented to make sure it moved in a timely manner and everyone had a doll to work on at the same time.  One of the problems I remember they mentioned was that sometimes people would end up with 2 or 3 dolls at once etc.  This is also a very long swap, even with only 10 or so people it would last throughout a year or so...4 weeks or so  to work on each doll and journal then maybe another week to take care of getting each doll to the next artist. We also might want to consider giving extra time during the winter holidays with all the other stuff that is usually going on during that time of year.  Thank you so much for undertaking this, I was going to but didn't know with school starting soon for the kids and life in general when I would have time. I for sure would like to be in the swap tho'

Thanks,
Barbi

I think we should probably keep each doll for less than 4 weeks, otherwise, yes, it'd take a VERY long time. I was thinking more along the lines of 1-2 weeks per doll? just seems like a very long time...

The Art/Journal Doll Swap sounds like great fun and what away to stretch one's abilities and imagination.  Unfortunately at this time I will have to pass.  I just don't have the amount of time it would demand to donate to such a project at this time.  I am however,  still interested in the other doll swap

I like the journal art idea, but does everybody send out a doll so we dont just get one turn to do sumthing? And then we get our doll back? That would be really cool.

Exactly!  Each person sends a doll and a journal.  It makes it way to each person, finally returning to the original owner.

great link! I think that, according to the journals, they sent a round a box with each doll with fabrics and crafty bits to complete the doll with and inspire- or guide- the next recipient. Interesting idea, but it might limit everyone's creativity? what do you think about this?
-olive

edit: p.s., I wonder what they started out with? it sounds like they started out with only a head and torso or something, and others added more body party? hmmm....

The link that listed is good but the original (I think) has a book called The Art Doll Chronicles ,I've looked for a site but haven't had any luck. Have had the book show up in searches though. They didn't send any crafting materials with theirs and I think it is better no to.  I can hardly wait!
