I've seen a plethora of different shop names on Etsy, from sentence-long puns to the humble name of the shop owner. I've always wondered, however, how much bearing these names actually have on the success of the shop.

I've been trying to come up with a shop name, but every time I do, I worry that the name is too pretentious, or too difficult to remember, or a number of other problems.

So what do you think? Why did you name your shop what you did, and how important do you find shop names?

Why not make up your own word and use that? I just went to the online dictionary and found a pile of short words I liked. Add an additional letter to an existing word and there's a new name (gobo = goobo, or goboo, for example).

There's no reason why a name has to have special meaning. It needs to be seen and remembered, period. A name won't have much bearing on anything unless it's so undesirable no one can stand to say it out loud. Your marketing and your business practices determine the association to your name, not the other way around. If you're a good business, your name is good. If you're a bad business, even the name Happy Sunshine can't save you.

You don't have to be too clever with the name (all the clever plays on words and cliches - they've been done, really). Pretentious? Some people love pretentious, but still, if it sounds clever, its probably been done. Always do a google search before settling on a name, and always do a godaddy domain search because if you manage to eek out a living of some kind, you'll want to buy that domain, so do it immediately, and not later.
