Michiko the Geisha Sock Monkey is based not on one person but rather on a group of people as a whole. In a society that is quickly becoming diluted by the overwhelming influence of western culture, the few remaining geisha of Japan help to preserve traditional forms of artistic expression and culture.

Geishas definitely rock!

Michiko the Geisha Sock Monkey is made almost entirely of socks from her elaborate hair-do to her traditionally whitened face. I also used a few bits of vintage Japanese kimono fabric in making her kimono. I was going to make the full kimono but I've always thought that too many clothes can sort of take away from the essential sock monkey-ness of a sock monkey so I decided to just imply a kimono with the neckline and obi.
