I'd also love to know exactly what is racist about it? Does it lie in the history of the sock monkey? Is it something to do with Mr. T? Really everyone is quick to say "This is racist" but no one offers an explanation. Frankly even with an explanation I wouldn't change my point of view. This project is awesome
.

I love the sock monkey but I admit I was a little uncomfortable when I saw it. It has to do with the connection with black people and monkeys.  Black people were seen as direct descendants of monkeys (this is before Darwin was accepted as a fact) and that this was proof of our low level of intelligence.  Also, look at much later cartoons of the 40's and 50's and see how they draw black people.  Big dumb monkeys with big lips.  It dehumanized us or simply made fun of our facial characteristics.

So as much as I love sock monkeys I, as a black person, have never been comfortable with them in my home. But every black person is different.  My own mother would laugh in my face and tell me to get over it.  And it's really nice that a lot of people don't understand the reason for the hubub.  Just one of those not so nice tidbits in American and European history.   Undecided

Regardless, everyone feel free to enjoy and love the sock!!  Cheesy

Oh snap. Mr. T's my hero and this is the coolest sock monkey EVER! It makes me want to make the whole A-Team sock monkey gang.

Someone's getting this for Christmas. Oh yes. ((and it just might be me))

As a side note, I understand the hoo-ha about the racist implications, but I whole heartedly disagree. Sock monkeys are a crafting staple (the first thing a lot of crafters made) and forming one to look like a childhood hero is a tribute, not a slur.
