For the width of the straps, you should measure from the middle of your bust (between your boobs) to just underneath your arm.  When measuring, the measuring tape should be horizontal.  If you're planning on hemming your straps, add another inch or so on.

For the band, you will need the measurement of your underbust.  Cut a strip that is the length of your underbust and is twice as high as you would like your finished band to be.  For example: if your underbust measurement is 25 inches and you want your strap to stick out two inches over your dress, you should make your band 25 inches by 4 inches, plus seam allowances.

I finally got a craftster account just to post this, my first project inspired from this wonderful place. I recently started sewing, and I couldn't resist trying a "quickie dress" such as this amazing example! I had three yards of some $1 plaid fabric from Wal-Mart and a whole afternoon to kill. I wanted something I could kind of comfortably wear in Orlando where I go to school. This was the result... mind you, I personally feel very naked in this dress, so I had to couple it with shirts...

OK, after seeing Rostitchery's WONDERFUL tut and all of the other Craftsters' dresses, I had to try one for my *pregnant* self... sort of... I made a top instead because I couldn't fathom all of the fabric that it would take to get around the belly without being too huge at the waist.  It turned out alright, but I am suddenly longing for my non-preg self... or maybe just one of the fabulous bodies that have been modeling the dresses so far!   Wink  You guys all ROCK!!

Here 'tis, in all its crappy-image-quality and bizzarely-posed glory:

And the back:

And the side view so you can see just how much higher the front is than the back, because I didn't bother making it (the front) longer since I want to actually wear this beyond the next few months:

Thanks again for such a straight-forward tut!
BTW, to Jessiesmess, I had the same Problem #2 that you did- one of my corners was sticking out in the front from the strap not getting sewn in all the way, but I just wrapped around it when putting it on- didn't occur to me to seam-rip!  Yours must look really good since you fixed that- any pics?

Lateralus4594 - Thanks for helping to clear things up. I guess that I may just have to get fabric and try it, even before I totally understand it.

Hopefully, I'll have a dress to post too!

jutybo, I think that top is absolutely great with you baby bump!  it looks really cute and so much more original than most maternity tops.

niftyba, i LIKE your dress over a t-shirt!!!  that fabric works great like that.  and i think you have solved a problem that was posed to my by email--how to wear something like this in winter.  the plain gives it a TOTALLY different feel, i just love it and would never have thought to use this fabric, thank you for taking the chance on it because it is cute cute cute.

and let me just say that i wish i had had something like this when i was pregnant--jutybo, you look adorable, the very picture of maternal beauty.  i love how you wrapped yours.

i can't tell you how tickled i am at the wonderful creations all of you have made!  i honestly started crying when i read the reply by Lateralus4594, her explanation was spot on, and it means that this design is now out in the wild, being understood and explained by other people--that is the nicest, most flattering thing that i can think of, and i am so honored and deeply appreciative of everybody's work and creative energy being poured into this dress.

i had to read the instructions step by step, i didnt want to mess it up.

as soon as i started too see al the beautiful dresses all of you ladies made, i wanted to make one also. so today i got this great fabric ( i didnt know what color to choose so i ended up with black. i want to make it in a summery color but i dont know which, any ideas?) anyway... i made it and it only took me an hour, maybe less.

here it is.. i will get better pics as soon as i can get my boyfriend to take them.

thank you rostitchery for the tutorial!!
