My favorite headphones were starting to look pretty dingy; the foam was falling off, and the paint was peeling off

(the other side was even worse - it had no foam!)

So, I was going to use some fabric that I had to cover the earpieces, but I found that I didn't have any elastic to hold my headphone covers on. I was in a bit of a dilemma, until I saw the bright turquoise chunky wool/acrylic blend lying in my yarn stash - then I thought, why not crochet covers! So I did.

Inside View:

Side View:

Front View:

Now I have the coolest headphones in town, and the wool will keep my ears warm when fall comes, and the bulk of the yarn makes the headphones softer to sleep on. Yay!

How I did it:
I really just single-crocheted a circle until it was slightly smaller than the headphone, then I did one row of double crochet to bend around the sides, and then I single-crochet decreased like mad to get the covers to stay on. If you want more detailed directions, pm me.

Opinions, Suggestions? Should I single crochet around the remaining plastic and the cord?

I love you for posting this!!  I was going to throw out my headset because the foam got yuck and I couldn't find any to fit!!  What a wonderful idea!  I have some soft cotton baby yarn just right for this--YAY!

You are sweet to post the instructions!!  I am going to be lazy and just do the ears!!

Yay! At least one other person thinks these are cool - my mom just thinks that I'm crazy!
You are sweet to post the instructions!!  I am going to be lazy and just do the ears!!

Thanks! I figured someone would want to do the same, and it was just easier to put the guidelines in at the beginning. I just did the ears for now - I can't decide if it will look cool or overkill with the other accents

Cool!  Cool  I did the same thing for my boyfriend's old headphones!  I used to love to wear them even if I wasn't listening to anything.

I used double crochet instead of single crochet.

It's not that hard - if your mom doesn't want to crochet around your headphones (as I assume she wouldn't, just because it's a little awkward and it's an odd request), just ask her to teach you how to do single crochet and double crochet in the round and single crochet decreases, and you can do it yourself!

I did the same thing for my boyfriend's old headphones
I used double crochet instead of single crochet.
I guess you beat me to this idea - and me, thinking I was being original, tsk, tsk. I thought about doing it in double crochet, but I really want to cover the earpiece, since there was nothing underneath it (at least on one side), so I opted to do mostly single crochet, with one row of double to make it easier to bend over the edges

No problem with the inspiration - I get so many great ideas from craftster, that when I have one that's might possibly inspire others, I like to post it!

Those headphones look AWESOME! The variegated yarn adds a nice touch, and now we can rock our headphones together. Tell your mom she is AMAZING - and really do try to learn to crochet yourself - it's a lot of fun, it's relaxing, it's pretty easy, and you can make a lot of cool stuff !

This is an awesome idea. I'm kicking myself in the head for not thinking of something like this months ago - my 'phones have NO foam left, and even the rubber piece that goes behind the ear has now vanished. I need to do this now.

One question, though - does it affect the sound at all? I would think a layer of chunky yarn in single crochet would muffle the sound at least a little bit.

I haven't noticed much of a sound difference; I think that it does muffle the sound a little, and it spreads the sound out more (do you understand what I mean?), which can be a good or bad thing - but I listen to my music so softly that the muffling hasn't been much of an issue (I never turn the volume all the way up, so even if it did lower the sound, I could just turn up the volume)

If you're really worried about affecting the sound, you can do what I was originally going to do, which was cut out circles of fabric and sew elastic around the edge to keep them on the headphones - I imagine if you use lightweight flannel or other fabric it wouldn't affect the sound much.

Sinatra, glad to find someone else who wants to save their headphones from drabness. It's kind of scary how similar our headphones are, though - almost exactly the same color yarn, the same kind of headphones, and they're both photographed on wood. Weird.

No biggie.  I wasn't that original either. Cheesy

The only reason I used double crochet is because I was using bulky yarn.

That's so awesome, and weird, and makes me reminiscent. I used to work at an answering service, and so we crocheted a lot. One day I got the idea to crochet headphone covers and the company bought yarn for us to make these for anyone who wanted them!

Clearly we think alike. This is a good thing =).

My mom works at a call centre, and a bunch of them decided they wanted covers for their headphones.  BUT!  They must be removable.  Were yours?  Any ideas how one might be able to make removable covers?

Mine aren't removable, but crocheting around an elastic band and increasing until it is the size of the headphones, the crocheting in the round until it's the right height, then decreasing again and joining might work, or making fabric ones with a drawstring or elastic.

I hope that made sense!
