I had made an Amish Puzzle Ball Pincushion for the Not your Grammy's Pincushion Swap 2, and several people had contacted me about a pattern.  I figured if I was going to come up with directions to share, I may as well share it with everyone.  I think that my directions should make sense, but if you have any questions, feel free to pm me, and I will attempt to clear things up.

So here it is...

This pattern should be 2 inches tall, and 1 inch at the widest point.
To make the Amish Puzzle Ball, you will need to cut 36 of these.

Each “wedge” section of the Amish Puzzle Ball uses 3 pattern pieces.
Stitch pieces together at edges, and stuff with fiberfill.

When you have sewn all the pattern pieces together, you should have 12 “wedges.”

Stitch 3 “wedges” together (end to end) and form a “wedge circle”.  You will do this a total of 4 times.

You will need to stitch the “wedge circles” together so that the points of 4 “wedges” come together.

When you have the puzzle ball all stitched together, you may want to add buttons to the connected ends to cover any less-than-perfect stitching.  Or, if you can stitch them together more nicely than I, perhaps you will choose to add the buttons simply for decoration!

Here is a completed Amish Puzzle Ball.

Ta-da, Puzzle solved! Grin

Funny you should say that, because they are often made larger as toys for babies (sans buttons, of course!).

A ball almost exactly like this turns up in Kumiko Sudo's Omiyage book- I was flipping through it last nite and saw it.  She calls it a scent ball, and recommends lavender to make it smell good.  Bet it would make a cool Japanese temari type ornament, too, if you hung a tassel from the bottom!!!  I've been wanting to make some stuff from her book, and now, seeing yours, I think that may be one of my next projects!  Love the Celtic fabric especially!  Great job!
