Hello.  We are throwing a party during an art festival (in which the festival will be held in our own back yard and the streets/blocks surrounding.)  I'd love to have suggestions for activities/food.

We are going to have several canvases for people to paint on (to be left and decorate our place) and are thinking of having a "paint" your own cupcake or cookie.

I was thinking of having several pictures of famous paintings/artwork and test people knowledge of artists.

More suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks,
Sandy

Blick Art Supply actually sells Van Gogh ears you can use for pin the ear on Van Gogh.

But pictures of Sister Wendy (the Art History Nun), maybe some trivia on the napkins...

You could take a canvas from the Home Improvement store and Pollock it out with some left-over paint.

Sounds like a pretty sweet party, though!

What about henna tatoos?  Party goers can take a bit of the "art" with them.

A great way to get people to contribute to a 'masterpiece' is to colour copy a famous painting, one with lots going on in it, and divide it into squares. Label the back of the square 1,2,3,4 etc. Cut the equal number of squares out of art paper, but scaled up multiple times. Give people an art picture square and note the number onto the back of it. They are to reproduce that art square using whatever media - paint, pencil crayon, collage from magazines...

Then at the end of the day you put it all together and see how accurate it is to the original masterpiece!

If you have an OHP you can use an acetate of the picture to draw the basic shapes onto the art paper before giving it to people.

I've done this with high school age as a workshop and they loved it!

At a cake decorating convention I went to I say a lady painting on a cake with food coloring in cocoa butter. It has the consistency of oil paints. She covered tha cake with fondant, but you can do cookies.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  Time ended up running short to prepare for the party, so I ended up having everyone paint on 9 8 x 10 canvases (to go on an area on my wall) as well as have everyone signature a poster from the festival.  It was a lot of fun and very interesting to watch others paint (and their reaction to the thought of painting.)

Feel free to add more ideas.

Thanks.

How about pinning ballons filled with pain on canvases then throw darts at them. (always good fun) You could use food colouring in the food to make interesting snacks and have a food carving contest, try and make things out of carrots etc then have a prize for the winner. Smiley

I take art classes, and at the end of each session we do a little keepsake picture. Everyone starts off with a paper and draws one thing on their paper, then passes it to their left. Then you draw something on the paper infront of you and pass it again to the left, so that by the time you're done, you have a little drawing by each person who was there! You could do this so the picture comes out as a scene (First you draw a frame, pass, then a background, pass, object in foreground, etc.) or just random. Sorry if the instructions were hazy on that!

For serving food, you could serve everything on wooden palettes. You could also use a plastic one for vegetables and dip. Make your own pizzas (though I don't know if you could get enough ovens) would also be good, and you could have a contest for most creative pizza.

Also, if you live near a beach or have an area with a LOT of sand near you, a sandcastle contest is always a good idea.

Those are my suggestions - I hope they help! Your party sounds like an awesome idea!
