When I did my little bowl from the other thread... I stacked them in the bowl (really hard, frustrating - not recommended, lol).

When I did this one, I lined a round pizza pan with foil & filled the whole thing with one layer of beads...some were "hole" side up, some weren't - it didn't seem to matter (saves time, too!).  Then when I decided enough of the gaps had melted closed, I removed it from the oven, picked it up by the foil, draped it over the old shade (a bowl would work, or whatever shape you are going for, or free form) and molded it into shape.  I used a spare pair of oven mitts to protect my paws.  Ya gotta move quickly though...once they melt, the whole piece gets pretty thick & though it's pliable, it's kinda resistant and more so as it cools.  Smiley

WHOOPS... two of ya just posted as I was typing... Smiley

peardream - yup, mitts!

peardream & nihiliststar - I've had it on all day & it hasn't heated up (yet).  I made the center hole the same diameter as the plastic shade I removed, but I've been keeping an eye on it this afternoon, for just this reason.  It doesn't actually touch it, there's a plastic ring that came with the lamp that screws onto a thread to hole the shade in place, then the bulb gets threaded down through there.  I'll take a picture...pictures can explain better than me!

What a quick reply!
Now I feel like a moron for asking the mitts question.  What was I thinking?
I have one of these horrible lamps too. It makes me sad to come home and see it's ugliness.  Now I'm excited about trying this project out!
I was so excited when I saw this, I ran out and woke up my napping boyfriend....he didn't really appreciate that, but he will once I try this lamp shade project out.
So awesome!!!

LOL about the mitts.  It's a totally good question.. it actually took me a moment to figure out what sort of gloves to use.  I knew I needed something, but I wasn't sure if the beads would be too gooey to use cloth, but then if ya use plastic, ya would melt to it.  Alas, the beads are tough enough (not too gooey) that the oven mitts worked perfectly.

Ha!  I thought my boyfriend would do the same thing!  He hasn't been home yet to see it in person...but when he saw the pictures he said, "Wow, we'll have to sit that lamp out somewhere now!"  I told him no... lol... 'cause I wanna make other patterns & different colors.  But it was sweet that he acted craftsterly-interested.  Smiley

For anyone else who isn't blessed with one of these ugly lamps (why did we all buy these?), it's similar to one of these...just fuglier... Smiley  http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_7/601-0747969-6144153?%5Fencoding=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B0000E552I

Evil $20 creations!  hehe... Smiley

I have one in my craft room that has a rose patterned shade, it's not that bad, but it could still use some love.

well, i was gonna do other stuff too. like laundry. and sleeping. and maybe my taxes? or at the very least, cleaning my room so that i could find my t4s!

i totally should have though! i came home from work, put them back in the oven, posted my last comment, then went back in the kitchen and our houseguest had taken them out!

i'm so tired of houseguests! and it's nice that he's making dinner, but it's bloody early to make dinner (for our house at least), i'm so tired of meat and potatoes since my grandparents just left and that's ALL they would eat, and i wasn't even planning on being home for dinner! damn it, i wanted to make my bowl to take to the housewarming party tonight!

O.K., so I looked at the tutorial on hgtv and yours are sooo much better.  Theirs looks all bumpy and lumpy, maybe that was what they were going for, I don't know, but yours are definately better.
