This seems like it should be incredibly obvious, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out!

I've finished the back and fastened off and am now ready to start the right front. The instructions say, "Now working on opposite side of the foundation chain," but isn't the opposite side... the side that should be the neckline? Am I crocheting down the *side* of the back? Or have I completely missed an important step?

You're right: that is the side that will form the neckline -- in the middle part. On each end it will be, basically, the shoulder seam. Here's mine:



The pattern construction on this is so cool; No seams, hooray!
