I found oodles of glass beads on clearance last summer and since I don't make jewelry I decided to make these beaded bookmarks (thongs).

This is the flattest book I could find that would scan. The scanner doesn't do them justice, really!

Using thin crochet thread/yarn, I took 9 pretty long lengths of it (24 inches maybe).
Knot one end together about 4 inches from the end.
Brade the 9 strands until you have a good book length (use a standard hardcover or paperback as a guide) and knot this end.
Using watered down glue, rub each of the ends of the 9 strands and let them dry, this will stiffen it for beading.
add beads to at least 6 strands of thread, knot the ends and add a drop of glue to be safe.

I gave these as Christmas gifts last year and sold some at a fair. They package nicely in little velvet or shimmerey cloth  bags. They were a big hit, especially among my big time reader friends.

I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. - Thoreau

Pretty, pretty.  I just made a beaded book-marker the other day, except mine was thin gold ribbon with a couple glass pony beads and 3 charms, a sun, moon, and star.  Even with knots in the ends, it's starting to fray.  I love your idea.  I'm such a bookworm; I think I'll make me a whoooooole bunch!

Thanks everyone.
I also made some personalized ones that I have since given away, for instance:
For teachers and my librarian friend I used metal alphabet beads and spelled out the words teach, read or learn.
For my Harry Potter fan niece I found some harrypotterish looking beads and also spelled out some names and words relative to the books.
For my 3 young daughters I simply added their names in cool colors and more funky looking beads.

Pixie- yours sounds nice, maybe you can put some glue on your ribbon ends and trim off the frayed part?

Here are mine!
one is of the crochet string, another is a bunch of embroidery floss and the other is blue hemp. I only had seed beads, pony beads and these crystally beads. :/
nothing spectacular and I scanned them so it's reallyhard to see. But it was fun.
