You can start at the widest part, that way you can make the opening as wide as you want and you can make the tube as long as you want, so decrease your stitches to the end!

You could start at the smallest end and work to the front, but imo thats a little harder, because then your going to have to guess at what point to stop increasing stitches!

I would say the pattern is double or half double stitches!

those hats are great.  i'm making one right now!  I just wanted to say that, for a snugger fit on the bottom of the hat, go down a hook size or two.  i'm using 5 mm, so I'll probably use 4.5 mm for the sc part.  I don't think it'll mess too much with the look of it, and you wouldn't have to worry as much about it slipping.  Just a thought.

LOVES IT!!! I will have to make one even though it's super hot here all the time!

~dexterchick~  Thank you so much for coming up with the pattern.

This hat is awesome!  After a few WIP's I have going right now I'm going to give this a go.  For added touch you could even add a brim to it.

~natiux~  Your's looks completely amazing!  I love the ribbon detail.

I agree with ~PhoenixDawn~  I'm working on a newsboy hat right now and the pattern states that after you work your decreases to change to a smaller size hook.  It'll give a snugger fit.

I think i just had a breakthrough on this!!! I'm making one right now and i'm using the picutre mainly as a guide... and!!!!
The stitches that look like double crochet might actually be triple crochet, and the green color that might be single crochet is probably half double crochet.

So, I'm pretty sure the hat is made up of triple crochet and half double. possibly even a size G hook as well, to get that small look of double crochet with triple. Or maybe an I hook, but i'm using an H right now  Roll Eyes

And i'm not making my hat as a tam, but more of a gentle slope towards ... fitting? haha.
So sorry if that doesn't make sense, but it does to me!

Your hats look great! I think I'm going to use this pattern for 2 of the guys who have been asking me to make them hats, except after the DC, it looks like they switched to HDC, so I think that's what I'm going to try. Smiley
