This was one of those naked wooden shelves from Joann.  I glued some wooden dollheads/balls around the edge for interest...

totally awesome. i think you should take pictures of you whole house. then post the pics and we could point out what we want to learn how to do. that way we could have a totally awesome house, just like yours!
