1  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Re: Chomp Chomp... Two hungry alligators and a horse. on: September 21, 2008 09:21:41 PM
Thanks BethieB and Yoopidu!

They are totally addictive...  I've been making toys non-stop since these, enough that I think I've made the money I would have spent on the toys I've made so far cancel out the cost of the scroll saw.  I mean, the bus and car would have been 8-15$ depending on where I bought them and the animals about the same...  I still have to make some milk paint and finish them all but that is planned for this weekend. http://callmekelly.blogspot.com/ See, tons of stuff really fast, there is no real learning curve if you can sew, you can scroll- at least simple shapes are easy!

I was inspired by http://www.make-baby-stuff.com/index.html, some posters on http://www.mothering.com/discussions/ and the fabulously talented wood toy makers on etsy, namely woodmouse and woodchesters (not sure legality of including their names so I didn't link, I'll be back to edit later after checking the rules as I remember reading something about not mentioning etsy here) to get off my duff and make my two boys some toys.

The alligators were made with a scroll saw using a pattern found here: http://www.freewoodpuzzles.com/freepuzzles.html I just didn't cut them into puzzles as my boys wanted some animals to play with.   The one with the wonky leg was made in a hurry, got a bit ahead of myself.  They are painted with a light wash of watercoloring until I can get some milk paint.

The horse was free handed.

I am so glad we bought a scroll saw...  it is easier than sewing and I'll never buy a wood toy again.    OOoohhh... and they smell so good!
