I recently purchased some merino/viscose roving, and it's GORGEOUS, but I just realized that I don't know anything about dyeing viscose.  All I have are acid dyes, will those work?  At worst, the dyes will just dye the wool and leave the viscose white, right?

Any info is appreciated!

I bought some more Wilton dyes recently, and I've been experimenting with using different concentrations to see what kinds of colors I can come up with.

First I dyed some merino roving, which is so incredibly soft!

Green and burgundy, which came out as a really pretty bright rose.


I meant for this one to come out a little more pastel-y, but I still like it.

And finally, here's my favorite!  Mill end roving, which I dyed by literally mixing up every color of dye I have and throwing them on randomly...er, artistically.  There are sooooo many colors in this one and I love it!

so the other day, i experimented with plying a single with thread for the first time.  i'm not sure how well it came out, it seemed like the yarn and the thread were sort of...not twisted together tightly enough.  how much twist do you put in your single before you ply it?  as much as for a 2-ply yarn?  more?  less?  and when you actually ply it, how much twist in the opposite direction do you usually give it?  any suggestions for my next attempt? 

So I've been seeing these big spools of serger thread at the craft store lately, and I was just wondering what the difference is between serger thread and regular sewing thread?  Is it a different thickness or made of a different material?  I'm using it to ply with handspun yarn, not sew, but I was just wondering if there's any functional difference between the two types of thread that would prevent me from using the stuff meant for a serger the same way I use regular thread.

does anyone have any suggestions for getting a good red color using wilton dyes?  so far the best i've been able to get is a sort of bright pinkish.  or would another type of dye be better to get a real red color?  i'm dyeing roving, if it matters.
