1  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / string or nué portrait project on: December 07, 2010 01:15:38 PM

it's been forever since I posted a finished project, mainly because it's been forever since I finished one... 2011 will be much better for stitching I hope  Cheesy This is a punked version of a goldwork technique called Or Nué - normally gold wrapped threads are couched down in straight lines and silk couched over to create a picture. It's used a lot in ecclesiastical embroidery. For this one I used a ball of string from my kitchen drawer (until I ran out and had to find some more string) because I wanted a rougher look, and I wanted to use the flowing couched lines to try and bring out the idea of lots of wrinkles and laughlines.

I couched down two different kinds of string, using matching threads just for the background and a dark brown DMC to create the outline. The two strings acted so differently when couching that it was difficult to always get even and smooth coverage. It wasn't entirely what I was trying to achieve with this technique, but I'm pretty happy with how it worked out in the end.

2  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / cross stitch mod on: October 25, 2010 11:14:22 PM
Hi all,

These are two little pieces I did this year, where MrXStitch challenged me to make them cooler than the original. Well I did my best. For the helicopter I used only the threads supplied with the kit, but for the mouse I dove into a little bit of stash.

4  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Cross stitch tree frog on: June 29, 2009 02:13:26 AM
I made a quick tote bag with a rough hessian outer layer and thought it'd be perfect to cross stitch on, so...

It's cross stitched with wool, and the leaves are made out of ribbon. This is what the whole bag looks like, as modeled by my dog (isn't he cute?!):

I've put a few more details on my blog.
5  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / first temari attempt on: June 02, 2009 04:26:28 AM
I've been seeing these balls around a bit, even bought a kit, but hadn't tried it before. Then the latest Inspirations had this temari design in it (Oliver Twist by Barbara Suess) and I gave it a shot.

Took me three tries  Embarrassed but I got there in the end. Now all I want to do is make more of them... this stuff's addictive!

7  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Anchor's Away! (Stumpwork/Goldwork) on: May 16, 2009 07:07:16 AM
This was the last piece of my recent stuff (I'll stop hounding you soon!). It turned out to be more goldwork technique than stumpwork, but sorta had a bit of both.

The star at the back is satin stitch, outlined with some couched funky metal-covered green threads I found at the Stitch show in the UK a few years ago. The pink bits are the same kind of thread, also couched down. The anchor is a fake leather fabric I've had hanging around for ages and is on layers of felt. It's outlined with purl, which I stretched a bit and ran some brown DMC through.

The rope was the worst thing to stitch EVER - the coils around the rope are ultra long bullion knots, with about 15 turns in each and each of them took about 5 minutes... count up how many there are! I did those over a brown wook core I needlefelted to get the shape I want.

8  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / rose, wire and mum stumpwork on: May 12, 2009 03:00:14 PM
I finally got the other pieces finished - and in time too! This is the second stumpwork (after the heart one) and is also inspired by classic tattoos:

9  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / flaming heart stumpwork on: March 22, 2009 09:47:10 AM
It's been a while since I've been seen around here, so I thought I'd dive back in with one of my more recent embroideries. I'm in a big stumpwork mode at the moment and am doing some which are inspired by classic tattoos. This is the first, a flaming heart:

10  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Doing something useful with cross stitch! on: August 27, 2006 02:03:03 AM
Hi all

I saw a couple of posts of what to do with cross stitch and how useless it can be Smiley I´ve stitched a design of my own on a jacket in cross stitch using waste canvas. This lets you stitch a normal cross stitch and then just wash it and you can pull the canvas threads out leaving the stitching behind. Anyway, behold!
