11  CLOTHING / Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Discussion and Questions / project blues on: October 06, 2008 01:02:23 PM
I'm good at heavy combat skirts in rugged fabrics with pleats and buckles and the like but today Im up against my evil nemesis;
The cotton Prairie skirt (da da duhhhhhhh)
as I sit here unpicking again...does anyone have any pointers or tips, stories of success or disasters ??
a tut on building a tiered skirt for plus sizes would be awfully handy if anyone has a link
sigh .....wish me luck
12  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / stash lust on: September 25, 2008 03:37:56 PM
Ive started ogling quilt fabric lately, to the point Ive ordered a couple of bundles of 5inch by 5inch squares in yummy fabrics to embroider on..
Do anyone else do this ?
13  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Stitch And BOTCH / Arghhh bleach *bad* on: September 22, 2008 06:06:01 PM
I had some napkins in an blah french blue
I thought Id bleach them to get some interesting effects before I embroider them
Did I mention I've been married for almost 2 years now; my husband and I used our plain white gold bands as promise rings for the 4 years before we got married during our LDR; they are engraved with "to thee I will be wed"  ....
NEVER  wear gold when playing with bleach
my ring is a murky brass colour now  Cry
I'm going try to slip my ring  into the jeweler in the morning  Cry if he cant fix it my husband is going to be so upset with me
14  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / my family's staple meal on: September 14, 2008 10:53:55 PM
This is has been the staple in my non A/c apartment this summer and my family think is the best meal ever so since Im getting rave reviews and requests I thought I might post it  as it mega easy

this is the base:
cous cous (I like the spinich flavoured stuff or the big Israeli type)
2 big flavourful tomatoes
a handful or so of roughly chopped cilentro
a solid tablespoon of hummus
a dash of miso mayo (or whatever dressing/mayo/dipping sauce is about your fridge)
some chives/ a dash of lemon or lime
mix lots

The add ins Smiley depends on who eats what and whats in the fridge
boiled eggs
tinned tuna or salmon
cooked chicken hot or cold
baked tofu (with spicy marinade is yum)
mix in add more hummus when in doubt

I love this recipe as I can make it kosher, vegan or non adventurous kid friendly OR all three and its all from boiling the jug and letting the cous cous sit and cook in a big glass bowl
mixed  with some greens and a slice of whole grain bread with cashew* butter and Im pretty sure its a proper meal

*allergy family Tongue
15  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / stitchers block.... on: September 09, 2008 07:19:44 PM
I have just thrifted some linen pants (which I turned into capris/long shorts)
one pair is bright violet the other is tinkabelle lime
In my defense they were a $1 a pair ...and its really hot in LA but they make me feel so frumpy and preppy (thank goodness for the  colours I guess)
I can not think of what to put on these pants at all ...total brain block
I work in the kids section at a bookstore and the dress code is rather open
so does the hive mind have any ideas???
16  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Completed Projects / bedroom for my 11yr old girl FINISHED !(not too many pics) on: August 31, 2008 09:22:11 PM
My girl was away for summer and wanted her room decorated, since we were getting rid of her loft bed it seemed a fair request.
She wanted it purple, gothy and "cool"
Now we live in student housing(yay family aparments!)...so it's white walls and extra extra low budget decorating

This room is brought to you by;contact paper, rastabation my fabric stash, spray paint, street finds and mod podge.
and all the art work is clip art printout in grayscale then stained with shades of purple ink.
if it still looks a tad empty that because my darling comes home tomorrow and she will finish it off with post helloween sale  "treasures"
Im really proud of the way it came out and the fact the whole room is sub$ 100
There are no good pics but I stenciled sparrows on one curtain with the words "fly my pretties" on it in black
Oh and the photo with love across it is a pic of when my girl and I were both much younger:)
constructive criticism is okay too...I know it not going to be to many people tastes and it *does* look rather budget
17  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / wonderful budget idea or asking for trouble? on: August 05, 2008 11:51:23 PM
Ive come in to some nice thick sheets of Styrofoam (free!)
I was wondering about mounting some embroidery work them by simply pinning the fabric over and around the styrofoam  (kind of like a el cheapo memo board) as a way to display some of my works (which I will post when I have improved)
the question is ...
Can anyone see a problem with this plan ?
I cant but Im a noob
18  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / spookygirl room ***PHOTO UPDATE*** comments? on: July 29, 2008 09:33:36 PM
Here is what Ive done so far (on my $50 dollar budget) ...thanks for all the great ideas!!!
Now what to do from this point ...stencil the curtains? more wall art ?
its always going to be a light airy space...but Ive done my best Smiley

Ok my darling girl is away for the summer and would like me to redo her room as we were getting rid of her loft bed etc. The colours are to be black & purple(by her choice) with the unpaintable  white walls.
The thing is she a slighty quirky for a 11yr old  I know her fav bands (tokeyo love hotel, AFI, My chemical romance) movie tastes (shuan of the dead ,lost boys, sleepy hollow Edward Scissorhands) so lots craftsters  might be able to make some sugestions
The thing is 2 years ago she still liked little girl stuff (dragons, fairies  pink) I want to support her growth into teenage tastes ....but I dont want to go to a lot of effort for a room that will be disliked in 6 months..  How far do I go ?
She might grow out of this goth/emo phase after all (I kind of doubt it)
I was thinking of printing big black star or skulls on some purple gingham for the curtains and spray painting the junkie faux wood bookshelves and desk black with purple accents  ....maybe a wall art rasterbation but what of Huh a band that might not be in vogue next month?  and I cant bring myself to put zombie pictures in my baby's room now matter how much she might like it .
Help me be a cool (ish) mother
Come on ..some one here must be under 20 or still with 'IT'
19  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / any views on lap stands on: July 10, 2008 07:53:46 AM
okay I'm now a embroidery geek ...I think I need a lap stand  any views, opinions  warnings ?
One of my concerns is I'm rather chubby ...do they make plus sized lap stands? (I'm looking at the hoop holder type)
and I'm not wanting to spend more than $50 ..if possible Tongue
20  CLOTHING / Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Discussion and Questions / modding ideas for a shirt? ...not a tshirt on: September 18, 2007 05:20:58 PM
I have a shirt ...its white brodie anglise (sp?) cotton  3/4 sleeves
and ....it fits my bust  *and* my hips *and * my back  given this I feel like I should wear it and not let it go to waste in my closet as this is not a normal thing in a store bought shirt for me.
However it's not me...at all  it makes me feel frumpy(frankly it makes me feel like a bad parody of a soccer mom with the high waisted bright blue jeans and perfect pageboy haircut), its too long to wear with skirts and it has dated 3/4 quarter sleeves.
I need some inspiration to alter this shirt into something I would wear
because the fabric is busy I dont want to add more to it that what is already there ...
