1  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / Need a 1940s/50s day dress pattern! on: May 02, 2011 12:51:19 PM
I saw this dress today:
http://www.pressloft.com/images/up_image/325345_s.jpg

(sorry, I'm not allowed to post pictures yet!)

Unfortunately, it isn't designed for a large bust. Also, I have a hankering to own one in plaid

Any ideas for a similar pattern, or one I can adapt by adding collar and patch pockets? It seems to be a standard single-bust dart bodice with zip up the back, and a full skirt in four panels.

3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Why do I need interfacing in a capelet? on: January 17, 2011 01:56:04 AM
I'm about to start making a capelet (I think that's the right name - we call them 'shrugs' or 'wraps' over here - basically a piece of material that wraps around the shoulders and ties in the front, sometimes made from fur or velvet) and the pattern calls for 'interfacing' between the lining and cape. This is the first time I've made something from a clothing pattern, so I'm struggling to understand what's going on. Is 'interfacing' the stuff that sticks one fabric to another (we call this Vilene in the UK) or stiffener? If the former, what function does it serve if the lining is to be sewn on anyway?
4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Looking for summer top/vest top/camisole patterns on: June 03, 2010 05:04:30 AM
I'm tired of tops squashing my chest and I think it's time to have a go at making my own! I'm looking for a simple vest/camisole shape that can be made in non-stretch cotton (sorry, don't know the US name for this but it's sometimes known as cotton duck here. Basically, plain cotton fabric.)

Something like http://is.gd/cAV69 would be great, but without the bottom frill and buttons. A kind of wide-strap, sweetheart neckline vest top. Any ideas?
5  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / English Patchwork/Hexagon Quilt - do I NEED paper templates? on: March 15, 2010 08:40:26 AM
Hi there!

I want a simple project to use up some bits of fabric I have lying around, and which doesn't require a sewing machine... so I thought of doing a hexagon quilt - I believe this is known as 'English Patchwork' in the US? I thought all I needed to do was cut out my hexagons and simply keep sewing them together until I had myself a quilt, but Googling suggests that paper templates are involved. This sounds fiddly and time-consuming to say the least! Do I need to use these to make myself a quilt?
6  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Can I stamp and emboss a Moleskine cover? How? on: August 18, 2009 04:36:38 AM
I'm new to rubber stamping and paper crafts, and I really want to make a customised moleskine cover for a couple of Christmas presents. Ideally, I'd like to do so on the oilcloth-covered type that have a rubber band holding them shut - can I do this with a stamp? What kind of ink would I need, and would the embossing 'stick'?

There are 'fake' Moleskines around int he UK which may have paper or fabric covers, but if embossing won't work on the oilcloth then I can start thinking about alternatives Smiley
7  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Best glue for making earrings and brooches on: September 07, 2008 05:13:27 AM
I was planning on making my own earrings with buttons and post backs. What's the best glue to use for these, and for making brooches with pin backs? I was thinking hot glue, is this better than epoxy?
8  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Can I get case-less USBs anywhere so I can make my own Fimo casing? on: August 01, 2008 05:29:28 AM
I've seen a few makes on here where people open up a soft toy to put a USB stick in, which look pretty cool, but I want to make my own hard casing for a USB stick. Something very similar to these:

http://www.weblogsinc.com/common/images/2993445022366434.JPG

I'd need the USB to have no case, but the only ones I can find online like that are wholesalers. Is it possible to buy them singly, either in the UK or online worldwide? If not, any tips and tricks on opening up the casing to get the stick part out?
