hey, all:)  Long time no crafting for me since i had a baby 3 years ago (babies and toddlers and needles and pins dont mix!)  Anyway, I finally broke my machine out of storage a couple of weeks ago to rock out my race for cure tshirt.  Do you like?  I just sew up the sides, cut out the neck hole, and cut the sleeves straight down in half.  No more oversized boxy tshirt - hooray! 


   

My rollerderby league had its annual Awards Ceremony last night and I was one of several who volunteered to make the "awards".  I picked to make the award for Best Pivot and Life of the Party- after receiving 2 cheapy frames from our Events head.  Our league color is pink so I chose that for the background.  I used construction paper for the most part.  Glitter makes everything better so I used lots of it- and some glue-on rhinestones.  I think they came out okay.  I was going to write Best Pivot or Life of the Party on them but my handwriting wasnt so good and I wasnt smart enough to start on this until a few hours before the party.  (I couldve printed something in a cool font at work....)  Anyway, I think they are fairly representative of the two awards.  The Life of the Party was challenging since I was foregoing any handwriting or letters.  I needed to come up with something that conveyed Party Girl without any words.  So, I hand-drew a pin-up type girl,


Then exacto-cut her out of some thick watercolor paper I stole off my artist boyfriend (and got reprimanded for bc apparently its 70 bucks a tablet ):


Then, traced her onto pink construction paper, cut her out , doused her in spray adhesive, and covered her in glitter.  Then glued her on the construction paper and added a league sticker and some rhinestones.  I followed the same method for the Best Pivot award- The pivot wears a stripe down her helmet so that was easy. 

Then I hung them outside to dry

and then framed them up.  Voila!

I knew how to both knit and crochet when i was a young girl but i dont remember a thing anymore!  There is a knitting store near my house but they dont teach classes:(

Are there any books you can recommend for a beginner to learn the basics??

Here are a couple of cool maternity dresses I made for my pregnant rollerderby teammater earlier this year.  I made them in our team colors of camo and pink- using the same maternity shirt pattern (i think butterick but can find out if you would like to know) that i elongated into a dress.  I also did a bit of handwork- including on the tie above the babybump so it would be more stretchy.  I have some action shots somewhere too I will try to find.  In any event, she was the cutest pregnant bench coach you ever did see.  I hope you likey:)

Hi All:

Here is a dress I finished last week to wear at my rollerderby league's game (called a "bout").  My team colors are camo and pink and we were the hosts for this bout.  I am co-chair of our Charity Committee and we hold a raffle each bout to raise funds for charitable orgs in our area.  Anyway, I wanted to make a military-style dress with flirty puff sleeves in my team colors to wear for the raffle.  I used a Butterick pattern for a shirt (8614, maybe?), made it much longer and added darts in the back.  it was a fun project until I got to the collar- it was supposed to have one but I messed it up so many times, I ended up just cutting it off and hemming it under around the neckline.  frustrating!  i was an hour late to the bout dealing with this.  next time we host (in July) i will get my dress finished in advance!  I am doing an apron dress next time- but need to find some better material that cotton broadcloth.  (I used the same camo cotton broadcloth and pink blanket satin that i used for my raffle aprons last season- they are on here somewhere.....)

Guess i will have to shop online.  If anyone has any suggestions on good sites to buy fabric just a few yards at a time, please share.  Thanks!

Hello Craftsters!  My secret santa giftee is a girl in my rollerderby league.  She likes skulls and the color purple (her team colors) and she is going to be a grandma at any minute.  Its her first grandbaby (she is very young to be a grandma and is still deciding on what the baby should call her- any ideas on that would be cool too but...)

I want to make her a scrap book that she can populate with pics of the baby and fill as she desires.  I just want to decorate the outside of it- so she will have a cool book to fill right away.  I am thinking using felt(?) but really have no clue. 

Can i just buy a plain scrapbook and glue on felt?  or would you suggest covering it in paper (that doesnt seem very durable to me)

Any suggestions for a supercool scrapbook for a supercool grandma?  I will of course post pics of the final product:)  Thanks in advance for any tips or tricks- and happy holidays!

Hey craftsters, my name is Carrieocity Kills and I am a rollergirl with the Arch Rival Roller Girls in St. Louis.   One of my team mates last season turned me on to your website (Hey Bambi Bloodlust, we miss you!) and today is my first day posting.   i am trying to get to that 10 post minimum so I can post pics of my aprons i made last week for our bout.

I've been making clothes for about 13 years now.  I am so happy sewing has become hip again and I love this site:)

maybe this is not the right forum but does anyone know where i can buy a foot for a standard Singer machine?  i dropped mine years ago and it snapped in two.  yes, it was metal.  boo!

anyone have a good pattern or ideas for bibs for elderlies?  i wanna make some for my grandfather who is in a nursing home and losing his mobility (so i am thinking velcro strap that goes around the neck and attaches on the front....)  my grandmother suggested doing them out of terry cloth because they wash well- and I wanna put his name on them but just have an old (but trusty!) Singer machine- not a fancy embrodiery (sp?) computerized deal.  i was thinking i'd cut his name out of cotton and sew it on the front.

We had our first bout last weekend and my team, the Smashinistas, were the host team- which means we set up/breakdown, take tickets and sell merch and raffle tickets.  Our uniforms are camo and hot pink and so I wanted to make aprons to match- that werent too long or matronly so as not to compromise our tough girl style:)

Check them out, I think they came out cute!  in fact, one of the other teams asked me for a pattern (but I didnt use one)  so that was cool.

I learned how to make the ruffle on the top right one by checking out the projects in your apron swap thread- but i put darts in it which made it come out kinda poofy.  So, I cut the other 3 into the shape I wanted first, then double sided them and embellished to my hearts desire.  I hope you like them- I had a lot of fun making them:)

Next I am going to make bibs for my grandfather who is in a nursing home.  Kind of a sad task but I hope to make him something neato (with his name on them since they tend to lose things-  boo!)
