thanks for all the replies!! These were fun to make. I have a "Button Maker" model 100 for 1 inch buttons. I made a circle template and traced it onto the fabric, then freehand stitched all the embroidery. (the mushrooms are satin stitch) Cut out all the embroidered fabric circles and use them in the machine in place of paper and plastic circles. on most of them it left a bit of fray around the edge but I just trimmed it off. voila! cute fabric buttons to pin on where you please.

I've done a couple in depth tutorials on making fabric buttons here:

In general it works fine as long as you're using thick, less stretchy fabric like canvas. If you have issues with tearing, you could try doubling the layers of fabric.
