12  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 66 ENTRIES / Aunt Ruth's Flower Dyed Silk Scarf on: September 02, 2011 09:29:40 AM
I can't believe I've been around here so long and this is my first challenge entry!

My husband's beloved Aunt Ruth passed away a few weeks ago. I having a long history of Floral Design, I made a lot of the flowers for her funeral. I also used a lot of the flowers from my own garden.  My husband's mother was very close with Ruth. I wanted to make something for her as a last memory of Ruth. I had read about how to do this so I decided to give it a try!

I used a Habotai silk scarf. It started off just plain ole' white. I used flower petals from the funeral arrangements and from my yard. I first covered half of the scarf with the petals. I scattered them and layered them randomly.

Next, I folded over the plain side of the scarf and used a rubber mallet to squish some of the color out.

Then, I rolled up the scarf with all the flowers inside.

Then, I used copper and steel wire to wrap the roll.

Next, I folded the roll up a little and put it in a plastic bag with a few T of vinegar.

I let the whole thing "cook" for a couple of days.
This is what it looked like when I first took it out of the vinegar bag.

I let it dry out then washed it with Woolite and ironed it after it was dry.
Here's a close up of the finished scarf. It turned out with a lot of green, which was perfect for my Mother in Law.

Thanks for looking!

14  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / 1 minute floral demo video tutorial ideas on: August 11, 2011 07:05:16 PM
I teach a short non-credit floral design class part time at the local technical college. In hopes of stirring up interest in some of the classes we offer we are making 1 minute video tutorials to post on line. I need to come up with 6 ideas of something flower related I can make/do in 1 minute!

So far, I have:
1. Making a bow
2. Wiring and taping a corsage

Andddd... that's it! PLEASE any ideas you have for a short tutorial- something that you would like to see or are curious as to how to make- please help me with ideas! I've been working in floral so long that everything seems boring and mundane, I'm just stuck for inspiration/ideas.
Thanks!
15  FIBER ARTS / Weaving: Completed Projects / First weaving class projects on: December 19, 2010 04:25:58 PM
I just finished up a class through Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) that I learned to weave using a rigid heddle loom.
I am in love with weaving!
I think I'm going to sign up for the next session too.
Here's what I accomplished:
Brooks Bouquet sampler which will go to my Mom for Christmas- perfect size to use as a table scarf

Houndstooth sampler in brown and white with turquoise accent

2 tabby scarves. The orange, yellow, gray one was the first project I completed. The blue has a random warp made up of 2 colors and a verigated slub for the weft. It will go to my sister for Christmas.

16  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Flower wreath on: September 21, 2010 08:25:42 PM
It took me AGES to yarn wrap this wreath form! Then.... I didn't know what I wanted to do with it! I found a huge package of paper flowers at Hobby Lobby and decided they would work! There are a few flowers mixed in there that I made too. It's a straw wreath, so the flowers are just stacked in a pleasing manner and attached with pins through the middle.
17  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Simple wheel chair friendly lunch bag on: September 21, 2010 08:04:24 PM
I work with folks with disabilities, many of them use wheel chairs. Generally my clients all have a lot of stuff. It's hard for me to carry anything of my own. Soooooo. I made a bag that hangs off the wheel chair without getting in the way (yes, I have my clients permission to hang the bag there Smiley )
18  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / a love note above our headboard on: September 21, 2010 07:55:40 PM
I love to write my husband little love notes. I know- aaawwwwwwww. I leave him little notes tucked everywhere. I decided to make a more permanent one to go above our headboard.
It's a paper cutout of my handwriting pasted onto a large piece of handmade paper.
He likes it Smiley

I hate my handwriting!
19  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Bike (bicycle) swap.... I'll try this again! on: May 20, 2010 07:43:23 PM
I posted this idea a while ago and no one was interested. There seems to be more interest in bikes these days though.
So, anyone want to do a bike themed swap- stuff for bikes, stuff featuring bikes, etc?
20  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Antler Damask Purse on: April 26, 2010 07:27:39 PM
I needed a new purse so I made one tonight. I made it up as I went along. I am happy with the results.
