2  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: how do you make mushrooms appetizing? on: December 10, 2009 07:44:02 AM
I love mushrooms. I use them in salads a lot. Just slice them (raw) and put them in a salad with cherry tomatoes and some spinach. Use whatever dressing you prefer. I like a balsamic vinagrette.
Maybe try them on pizza? I like mine with olives too.
I go to a sandwich place that makes an awesome veggie wrap. They slice them up and saute them with some green bell pepper and then put it in a warm wrap.(Like a falafel or gyro wrap) Top with lettuce and tomatoes and it is soooo yummy.
Maybe a mushroom stroganoff? Experimentation is key.
3  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: Smart Dogs Vegetarian Hot Dogs on: September 01, 2009 08:22:17 PM
hmmm, I have a thing of tofu pups in the refrigerator. The bf bought them when I went vegan so I'd have something to eat. Isn't he sweet? Things is- they are pretty gross. Most veggie hot dogs are. So I like to get creative.
Try cutting them into little circles putting them in a pot with a can of veggie baked beans, some ketchupor brown sugar, and spinach or another leafy green. As much or as little as you want. I think it is pretty yummy...but it makes the pups orange.
Also, you can put them in some crossant dough(like pilsbury) and make vegan pigs in a blanket. Haven't tried it yet.
I usually just cook mine on my george forman for a while and then put them on a toasted bun and cover it with toppings until I can't get the gross taste as much. Grin
4  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: ~*~*Reviews of Prepackaged Vegetarian and Vegan Foods*~*~ on: August 25, 2009 11:17:18 AM
So I recently made the transition to being vegan after a year and a half of being vegetarian...Really, I just had to cut out cheese and watch what is in the food I eat more...So anyway, my boyfriend realized I had nothing to eat at home and took me to the whole foods store. I got lots of yummy stuff and the first thing I have tried is:

Dr. McDougalls Big Meal Cups
I'd say a 4 1/2 out of 5.

I tried the vegan curry. Yummy, though it was a bit watery and if I eat too much it made me a little sick....but it still tasted good. Plus they were only $1.25 a piece....wow.

They have tons of flavors and you can even buy them online. Smiley

OH! And Kale Chips. Cheap, healthy and tasty.
Rinse and dry kale, place on baking sheet, drizzle with some olive oil and sprinkle on sea salt, then bake at 350 until crispy. Yummy. You can even cook it in the frying pan. I like mine with ketchup. Tongue

just to add a little p.s. - i recently found out that M&Ms Mars is conducting horrid animal tests.  i don't want to go into the details here because it's not easy reading if you know what i mean, but i encourage you to go to peta.org to check it out.  unfortunately they are the makers of many candies including skittles (mentioned in a post above), starburst, snickers, twix, m&ms, mars bars, milky ways and probably some others i can't think of at the moment (if you're concerned just be sure to check the back of the package to see who the manufacturer is).
sorry to be the bearer of bad news Sad but i hope that some of the above snacks are inspiring!

 Shocked I hadn't realised.
Thanks for letting us know, I sure as hell won't be buying their products again.

Thanks for mentioning this. I'd also like to add that in America, Skittles have gelatin in them, so they are not veg friendly.
As far as snacks go, try looking around the health food section of your local grocery store, or even stop by a health food store. Lance crackers are all veg friendly. I reccomend American Gourmet products also. They have vegan cheetos and caramel popcorn snacks.
Recently, I've fallen in love with avacodos.
7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: Ideas for horse lover on: July 31, 2009 05:57:55 PM
For this past Christmas I made my boyfriend's sister a tote bag with a horse shoe on it and horse fabric as the lining...she never uses it, but it is an idea.
Maybe a nice framed picture of her all geared up with a horse? Sorry I can't help much. My boyfriend's mother has been around horses her whole life and as much as she loves the animals, sometimes she just wants a break. She lives on a farm now and it is her 24/7 job to make sure the horses and other animals are taken care of. So this past birthday we bought her a nice cake and a day at the spa.
8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / younger sister sweet 16?! Next week on: July 31, 2009 05:52:18 PM
Soooo.... basically, I'm a horrible sister. My younger sister's 16th birthday is next week. I only just realized this...now I have NO IDEA what to get her. I need you guys to help me.
She likes:
  • Harry Potter
  • Twilight
  • Dr Who
  • Comic Books
  • and..stuff like that?

So my best idea so far is to make her a cake with the Tardis(Dr. Who) on it....any other suggestions?
Help is GREATLY appreciated,

Rebecca

I didn't add any length. I just made a tube dress and added a band around the bust and sleeves using the scaps.
