I just finished these this weekend:



Baby socks are just so adorable!

It fits well actually...I thought it was too few stitches to cast on but it worked out just fine with the lacey part added in.  I found the repeats easy to remember once you've done them a couple of times...to me, not too bad of a knit especially since I haven't done too much lace.

Hee hee...it's not cables actually...it's a twisted stitch that looks like cable...cool eh?

Well, here's the funny thing - you can try to duplicate *exactly* but it will more than likely not come out the same...unless you sat and watched the dyer go through their process, the amount of dye, the amount of setting, what base yarn they chose, etc. etc. it's highly unlikely it'll be "duplicated". 

What I find fascinating is we all are doing the same sort of dyeing process but we all come out with something slightly different...and with experience, you end up dyeing a little differently than you did the first time too.  Even choosing a colour can be tricky...you might think you know what the dyer used but you might be mistaken too.

I say go for it!  You will quickly find out that copying is not that easy no matter how hard you try.....LOL

if not, what dyes do you recommend for this method?
i'd love to try some handpainting with roving, but i'm not sure what dyes to use, or if it's different in any way from regular dyeing.

Sure, you can use Koolaid!  Just do a search on how to do it through Google...a tutorial should pop up for you.

As for other dyes, there's a lot - Jacquard/Gaywool/Washfast - just to name a few.

I wouldn't worry too too much...if it was a teeny bit, you should be fine...from what I've read, the biggest problem with dyes is developing an allergic reaction to them and then all thoughts of dyeing go out the window.  Of course that doesn't mean wear your mask at all times...I wear mine while dyeing, while rinsing and even while spinning the yarns - dry dye might fly into the air and also, who wants to breathe those tiny wool particles either?

Can you move your dyeing outside?  All mine has been moved into the garage to avoid all this little issues as much as possible.
