21  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / What Do You Use for your Art Journal Covers? on: June 03, 2013 01:08:23 PM
When I search around the internet I see a lot of creative ideas for Art Journal covers. My personal all time favorite has been to use the readily available and AFFORDABLE canvas boards. I tend to use the 4"x6", and 5"x7" sizes...I find that size of a journal easy to work in and they fit easily into a bag or backpack so I can always have them with me.

The canvas boards make the art journal STURDY -- which is a huge plus to me because I tend to give it a lot of abuse  Shocked And, of course they will readily accept a variety of mediums when it's time to design the cover. Punching holes in them is very easily done with an awl as well -- and I don't need to insert eyelets because of their sturdiness and ability to easily handle the waxed linen thread I stitch with.

So, my question to you is ....what do you use? Am I missing out on anything I should try? And what sizes do you tend to create your journals in?

Lovely cover. You did a wonderful job of carving that stamp!

Thank you, rackyroo.
I surprised myself with this one!  Grin

Where do YOUR ideas come from for your Art Journal covers?

A few years ago I had carved this image of John Lennon not really knowing what I was going to do with it. I was new to rubber stamp carving and needed a challenge I could really enjoy. Having been a fan of the Beatles since 1963 I decided John would be my first carving challenge Smiley That was about 5+ years ago! A few weeks ago I decided it would make a cool art journal cover!

Because I had used the iconic image of John with his NYC t-shirt on I decided to make it appear that John was still looking over the city. After laying down some decorative paper as a background, and a touch of paint to tone it down, I drew in what looks like a bit of a cityscape -- and stamped the image of John above it. Of course I had to embellish with other stamps, etc. Smiley

I also carved an image of Paul...I am sure it will eventually become a journal cover as well.  Grin

How do you decide what will be on your journal cover?

25  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / The Process of Preparing Signatures for Coptic Stitch Journal's (heavy pics) on: June 01, 2013 10:35:39 PM
While I have a few moments of spare time here on a Saturday night I want to post a few photos of preparing the signatures for making Coptic stitched journal's.

I love sharing this and I am more than happy to TRY to answer any questions you may have if you are new to making these....

Some people call this WORK....I call it MY PASSION....it is so important to me to ENJOY every step when creating something handcrafted.

You will notice a 'book cradle' in one of the pics....I bought this several years ago on etsy.com - but don't feel like you 'need' one.....I started out using an open phone book and it worked as well!

I am going through a lot of old files on my computer and anything I think may be helpful I will post when I am able.

Thanks for the inspiration Smiley I definitely needed an extra push to get me started. I'm fairly new to art journaling so blank pages are VERY intimidating to me! Sometimes I have TOO many ideas floating around in my mind. It gets so overwhelming that I'm not able to incorporate that onto a journal page. It's frustrating. I tend to over think things a lot.

Hello Beautifulsoul -

You are welcome!
First of all, let me say that I LOVE your jewelry!!!  Grin Wonderful work!

Maybe you could have TWO art journals -- one for journaling things that you PLAN and THINK THROUGH...and one for spontaneous free-spirited splashes of art! Your spontaneous journal can be where you dare to just throw caution to the wind and simply enjoy THE PROCESS. I do this a lot in my journal -- I go into it with no real plan in mind...I let the process guide me..and usually I have some favorite music blasting as well. I am a child of the hippie generation (the 1960s, yes, I am THAT old...LOL!)...so I usually have on some Pink Floyd, Beatles, or Stones...and even the occasional classical music to relax my mind  Grin

I get over the 'blank page' jitters by beginning with layers of paint and scribbling or stamping....most often it all gets collage images or more paint put on top of it....but it frees my mind and reminds me that I can't make a mistake...after all...it's only paint on a piece of paper that can be painted again  Roll Eyes

Don't pass judgement on yourself or what you journal....let it be all about expression and discovery!
27  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / What Do You Journal About? on: June 01, 2013 04:06:49 PM
Do you ever wonder sometimes "what have I got to journal about?"
When I first started keeping an art journal (about 7 years ago) I thought about that a lot....then realized the answer...."EVERYTHING!"  Grin

I never wait for something 'special' to journal about -- most often I just journal the ORDINARY!

The example below --- we were **thinking** about rearranging the furniture in our home ....THAT was certainly not anything special...but it ended up making a FUN journal page...and I want to have FUN in my journal!

Does the blank page intimidate you? Do you not know HOW to begin?
My advice is -- look around you --- there is so much inspiration all around us...and it doesn't have to be anything mind-boggling, or a special event in your life...make it FUN and MAKE ART...that will turn the ORDINARY into EXTRAORDINARY!  Cheesy

28  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Exposed Spine Coptic Stitch for Art Journal's on: June 01, 2013 01:05:58 PM
Happy Saturday Kindred Spirits  Grin

Here's a question for those who make their own Coptic stitched exposed spine journals ....
What do YOU do to keep the spine interesting and appealing?

I use decorative papers to separate my signatures.
I simply cut a piece of decorative (scrap-booking) paper the same length as the signature paper and make it about 2 inches wide. Then I punch the holes, wrap it around the entire signature, and sew it in all together. I LOVE the added element it gives to the spine - and an interesting addition when flipping through the pages as well.

I would LOVE to hear other ideas on how you do it!

This is awesome! Really well executed. (Orange and turquoise)

Thanks for the compliment!
I've used orange and turquoise on other art projects, but never on a journal yet! I think it's time Smiley

So bright and cheerful! Great journal.

My craft room is turquoise with red accents; it's one of my favorite color combinations as well.

I think I'd feel right at home in your craft room! Those colors must help create a great environment to inspire you!
Amazing how much we are influenced by color!
