51  Visual Journaling - When I Didn't Feel Like Making Art! in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by jolenemarie on: May 27, 2007 02:33:39 PM
Sometimes we question who we are as ARTISTS. Sometimes we are unsure we deserve to call ourselves ARTISTS. But, in reality we are all artists. Whether we create with paint and collage, or find the best way to run an office, or teach a child, or play a rift on the guitar.

I awoke on Saturday questioning if I was an artist. I didn't feel creative on this day. I wanted to SHUTDOWN...but then....I got out my Visual Journal and I played. That was the key. I was having FUN. I was expressing myself. It was then that my spirit began to lift..and it was then that I was able to call myself an ARTIST once again.

Another page from my junk mail journal. The word SHUTDOWN, the words LIFT YOUR SPIRIT, and the image of the window with the ocean view are all from junk mail I found in my mailbox this past week. Art is all around us. No excuses. Go. Make. Art.

52  A Clock Made From A Book in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by jolenemarie on: May 26, 2007 01:32:26 PM
Here is an idea I came up with awhile back. I took an old book and cut a niche out of the back (through the hardcover and pages) to hold a clock movement. Then I glued the entire book together, making it a solid piece. I designed my 3-D scene on the front - and then installed the clock movement. I also attached a wire on the back for hanging. This is an idea anyone can do -- and for only the price of the clock movement (around $7 where I live) you can make a one-of-a-kind clock that makes a great wedding or house-warming gift.

53  Altered Matchbooks in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by jolenemarie on: May 26, 2007 12:52:38 AM
I thought I would share an idea that many can try here...since the materials are something nearly everyone has or can easily find. Some time ago I began altering matchbooks. I sold quite a few of them on eBay...I no longer make them to sell - but they are fun to create and collect -- sort of like mini works of art...even smaller than ATCs.

I used acrylic paints, inks and rubber stamps and then distressed them. Here are some samples:

54  More From My Junk-Mail Visual Journal! in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by jolenemarie on: May 24, 2007 04:58:56 PM
I am continuing on... creating my first Visual Journal and challenging myself to find use for junk mail, and generally 'found' ephemera that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Yeah, like we need more of that?!?

Here are two more pages I did from such stuff...

Hey CraftyFriends Smiley

Here is a photo of my latest eight-needle coptic journal...the covers are made from archival canvas panels, and the pages are 140-pound index which I swear is the best paper to journal on...you can layer paint, collage, whatever on this paper and it takes a beating!!

I am enjoying going through all the posts here of creative kindred spirits. Crafster.org rocks!

I received such nice comments on my coptic stitch journals. Thanks everyone!

Although I have been an artist all my life (ever since I picked up a stick and drew in the wet sand on the beach!)...I have never kept a Visual Journal. I just started one a few days ago...

Here is a page I created today... if you visit my blog (address in signature) you can click on the image and see it larger, if you are so inclined ;-)

peace!
