341  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / What's your favorite soap you make/have made? on: January 17, 2008 03:01:02 PM
I've been in a bit of a soap making rut (ie I haven't made any new bars in a while) and am needing a little inspiration because everything sounds boring. I usually make about 6 batches at a time, so I need a little push to bother getting out all my equipment.

Soooo, what's your fave bar and why? One of my faves that I've made is lime essential oil with a little black pepper essential oil and a tiny touch of patchouli to ground it all, colored with lime green and black pigments. It smells really neat and looks awesome.
342  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Alexander Henry/Amy Butler Swap on: December 22, 2007 07:43:04 PM
Anyody else love Alexander Henry/Amy Butler type fabrics? I was thinking it would be cool to make 1 large item and send 2 coordinating pieces of fabric. Any takers/suggestions?
343  COOKING / Dessert / ISO of dessert without sugar or dairy on: November 27, 2007 11:49:56 PM
So, between trying to eat healthier and a newly developed inability to digest dairy, I've been pretty sad about dessert lately. Eating sugar now that I've tapered off it makes me really sick, but what kind of dessert type thing can I have? I've been drinking a lot of green tea with splenda and doing the fruit for dessert thing, but I really like crunchy things too. I can eat a little bit of sugar without feeling sick, but not something chalk full of it, like a regular cookie.
344  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Felting flowers question on: November 21, 2007 02:10:21 PM
I'm making several felted flower brooches, and I'm not quite sure how to do it. I have my wool flower pieces crocheted up, but the only thing I've ever felted is a larger piece, not a bunch of tiny things. I'm planning on putting them inside a lingerie bag so they don't get lost, but if I put like 10 little pieces (different colors) together in the bag, will they stick together or bleed onto each other? Would it be better to sew the layers of flowers and leaves together before I felt them?

Also, I'm not sure how to attach to the pin backs...just sew on? I was thinking if I put a bead on the front to secure it, sew through the layers of flower/leaf and then sew through the pin/brooch piece? Or should I glue them?

Craftster--Liberry Booked (angel--Sansa!)

I need one angel for Liberry Booked, her craft was crochet, so if anybody would like to try crochet, or already knows how to crochet that would be great!  Requirements are 1 large and 1 small package. Her origninal package was lost, and then her partner went MIA. Sendouts were almost 5 weeks ago, so I hope she can get a great package!

A little info from Liberry Booked's survey:
Please list your color/motif/pattern preferences
I love all bright colors except for pink, and I'm not too sure about motifs and patterns.
Please list your dislikes/allergies/anything else you think your partner should know.
I'm not allergic to anything, but I do dislike the smell of cigarette smoke.

And here is a brief overview of the swap:
Details of swap: Is there a new craft that you are itching to try? Have you seen something fabulous on Craftster and would love to make something similar? Do you have a kit or supplies to make something but have never quite gotten started? Will you never get around to it without a little extra motivation (for instance, the motivation of having to send it out on a certain date?)

This is designed to be a low pressure swap so you can try a new craft. Your partner will also be trying the same craft you are, and the two of you (or group if we end up having a ring) will have a “mentor,” a person who has experience in that particular craft and is there to give you tips, support, and encouragement. There is no worry that you will be sending to someone who is already an expert, since you will be learning together.

You will be sending 1 large and 1 small item or equivalents to your partner. Please see Craftster guidelines here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=6553.msg706081#msg706081

Thanks in advance for helping us out!
346  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Calorimetry X2 (pic chubby) on: October 29, 2007 11:01:49 PM
I worked up a couple of these for a swap. I kinda based them on the idea for the pattern found here: http://bronsfiberstuff.typepad.com/brons_blog_ii/2007/01/the_second_stor.html#comments
in terms of increasing and decreasing, but used different stitches. In the smaller one (silver button), alternating rows of hdc in the back loop, hdc in the front loop-kind of-to get more of a "knit" look, and in the bigger one (black button), single crochet seed stitch, which I not only really like the look of, but works up so quickly since it's so easy to crochet into the chains! Oh, and the awesome silver button came from Superhooker in a swap!

Close up of stitches:

mm, these pics are kinda poo, I might try to take new ones in the daylight tomorrow. I hope my swap partner likes these!

Poor Marabu was not only flaked on by her original partner, but by her Angel! I am really hoping somebody from Europe can volunteer to Angel for her to cut down on shipping time. Also, since the first Angel I got for her went MIA (and I feel bad about that!) I need somebody who has a few swaps under their belt. Please help us out!

Craftster--Marabu *sends to Austria  (Angel--Gwenyvarr)

I need one angel for Marabu, her craft was soap, so if anybody would like to try making soap, or already knows how to that would be great!  Requirements are 1 large and 1 small package. Her original partner flaked, and then her angel went MIA. Sendouts were over 2 months ago, so I hope she can get a great package!

A little info from Marabu's survey:

Please list 3 crafts you would like to try, number 1 being your favorite. You should be able to get your first pick, unless nobody else wants to try crafting that item. Really obscure crafts may be harder to match up.
1. soap making
2. lip balm
3. Book binding
Please list your color/motif/pattern preferences: well I'm basically open to anything I guess, I usually don't like pastell colours, but with soap or lip balm they're ok
Please list your dislikes/allergies/anything else you think your partner should know:
no allergies, except nickel.

And here is a brief overview of the swap:

Details of swap: Is there a new craft that you are itching to try? Have you seen something fabulous on Craftster and would love to make something similar? 348  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / No-fail bath bombs on: October 21, 2007 11:02:58 PM
ETA: I had this just as a recipe in discussions, but decided to add a pic and move it to finished projects. Obviously the pic is of the half mold variety made using the pull apart Christmas ornaments and not my regular mini muffin tin bombs. To pack them in really firmly I push on the top with the bottom of a (clean) 16 oz amber glass bottle, it's the perfect size. The pic shows the bottom of the ornament, but I really used just the top half, it is a tiny bit bigger than the bottom, as you can tell by the fake pic of me pushing on the already dry bomb with the glass bottle. The top half has a little bit of a tab which is nice to hold onto and allows you to tap the bomb out easier than using the bottom half.  These bombs are eucalyptus rosemary mint. And the wussy little one on the right isn't a whole one, it's just what I had left over. Cheesy

I know there are a couple people having problems with pre-fizzing bath bombs, so here's the recipe I use. No spritzing with witch hazel and adding the citric acid at the end saves if from fizzing while you make them. You can leave out the SLSA if you don't like using it.

Bath Bombs

Dry
2 cups Baking Soda
1 cup Corn Starch (if you don't want to use this, replace with sea salts)
2/3 cup Fine Sea Salts
*2/3 cup Sodium Laurel Sulfoacetate (SLSA)* OPTIONAL

Wet
5 tablespoons any oil or butter (Try sunflower, olive, or sweet almond oil, or shea or cocoa butter. Melt butter if using and cool slightly)
4 teaspoons water
1 teaspoon Fragrance Oil
Coloring (water based, mp soap type colorants work best. If you only have oil based mix it in with your carrier oil thoroughly before step 1)

To add at end
1 to 2 cups Citric Acid (I think the higher amount of citric acid makes a harder bomb)

1. Add the oil, water, FO, and coloring and “mix” in one bowl. Of course the oil and water won’t actually mix together, but get it all in there.

2. In another bowl toss together all dry ingredients, except citric acid, being very careful with the SLSA since it is a superfine powder and will get up your nose and you will choke! You might want to wear a little mask at this point, Michael Jackson style.

3. Add the liquid to the dry mixture and stir.

4.  Mix well with hands, while doing this start adding the citric acid.

5. It is ready to mold when it reaches pie crust consistency. Pile into mold cavity and push very hard down into molds.

6. Tap molds out immediately onto a cookie sheet or wax paper to dry. You might want to try to use a paper towel, but that would be a bad idea.

7.  Let dry overnight and package the next day. Use slippery tub caution due to oils in the mix.

**Add 1/2 t Poly 80 to oils to make oil dispersible in water, optional.

Tips: I usually use mini muffin molds to make my bombs, to get them harder I overfill each muffin tin with the mix and push down on the top of it with a bottle that is the exact size of the muffin tin (I belive it's a 4 oz fo bottle). I remove from molds immediately.  Try to resist adding extra liquids even though it will feel very dry. Correct consistency is like slightly wet sand you find after digging down a little ways under dry sand. If it's too dry to hold together, add a few drops water or oil at a time, but try to do that before adding citric acid.

Makes 10 half spheres @ 2 oz. each. For one tub use 2 oz (half sphere).
Makes 18-22 mini muffins. Use 2 per bath.

* I added the SLSA for foaming. It was not in the original recipe and is fine without it, it is WAY more expensive than the rest of the ingredients, but I like them to foam and fizz. Some people are allergic to it, it is a surfectant.

Credit to Froggie from Yahoo groups who gave me the original recipe many years ago.

I keep seeing people asking for suppliers for this or that, so I thought I would start a list, and you can add to the post and I'll keep editing the first post so they are all together in categories. I hope that is ok! Hopefully these will be suppliers you have actually dealt with, not just a link you found online somewhere.
