thanks everyone!  i am truly delighted with my bag - so much that my little one starts potty training tomorrow so that I don't have to share it with diapers...

ysmeine -  how come you see blue?  its actually a dark mossy green...

and thank you so much platypus project....  i will definitely have to try interfacing sometime.

PS:  I made a matching headband from the lining fabric and it turned out pretty well.  I used this tute - here's a pic

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this pattern from Mama's pocketbook.  I printed the pattern out a few days ago and studied it intensely so that I would be able to understand what I was doing.  (I'm still a newbie)

I think mine turned out pretty great.  I use it to carry my little guy's nappies/diapers and wipes as well.  It's a LITTLE too small for his stuff too, but when he is potty trained, it will be all mine!!!!

The outer is made from heavy corduroy type material and the inner from a heavy weight curtain fabric.  I didn't use that stuff that makes it stiff (what's it called?) because quite frankly I didn't have the know-how.  It only cost me NZ$5 to make since I got the fabric on sale.

Wow, thanks everyone for all the great ideas!  I'm thinking I might just get three buttons in red, white and blue and stitch them onto the cuffs (thanks Bladerunner).  Kinda make them a little sailor-ish.  (With a bit of American influence thrown in for our American friends!)

I'm terrified of pockets Blonderage, but might try a plain white one on the left butt-cheek.

And I really like the mock fly idea, I'm just not sure how to do it....?  sdhrt: Would I need to sew more material onto the pants?  I just wish it was summer over here so that he could wear them.  It's so cold at the moment that he lives in thermals and jeans.  Sad  (We're in New Zealand)  Is it bad to hope your child doesn't grow much before summer?

The sewing bug still has not left me.  I haven't had much time, but over the course of a few days I made these little trousers.  I wish I had taken a picture of the shirt and pants they were made from.  They are made from a shirt that was passed along to my husband but is too big.  I found that the length wasn't enough, so had to kind of add a little bit extra in the bottom.  Instead of trying to make it look like it was all the same material I decided to go in the opposite direction and use up the last bits of material from the last pair I made.  I'm not sure if they look a bit girlish?  Also, do the pants need more?  It feel as though something is missing, although I also don't want to overdo it.

Comments and criticism welcome.  (PS:  He has thermal leggings on underneath, so ignore any white bits that stick out under the trousers!)

it's material I got from Mocambique a couple years ago.  it hung in my kitchen as a makeshift curtain for years (before I was familiar with a sewing machine)

Wow, that's gorgeous.  I really admire your choice of colour.  Very pretty!  Did you work off a pattern or make it up?

Yeh, the straps weren't the easiest part, but I love that you can make it your own and adjust the pattern.  I think next time I try it I will make it bigger and use a heavier fabric like upholstery fabric like Tiny Happy uses. And make the straps wider...  That will make sewing them together easier.  Hope you post pictures of your bag.....  Smiley

Ok, don't laugh, but that fabric lining up was completely accidental.  When I was finished the bag and taking photos I noticed it.  I have NO idea how it happened......  Smiley
